Am I being naïve in waiting out for a Qantas or Air New Zealand/Virgin Australia sale for fares to Wellington in December?

On one hand, I haven't seen a Trans Tasman sale for some time, but then again the period in December being so close to Christmas why would they put sale fares on?

My situation is do I wait for a possible sale and but then, or do I just bite the bullet and buy now and not look at my email notifications in case a sale does come along?

I got an email from QF yesterday which had something like "Australia on sale - trans tasman flights". I didn't click on it but maybe there's a sale on now (at least from the NZ side)?

If you want to travel within about 2 weeks of Christmas, I would almost certainly book now. Otherwise, it may be worthwhile waiting for a sale but of course there are no guarantees. I notice that Qantas is currently having a sale on trans-Tasman flights, though not for holiday period bookings and not to WLG

FWIW I recently booked a trip to Wellington with QF during a sale for around $350 return.

Weirdly we've found it cheaper to book J than Y for christmas...

I was looking at VA to Akl from BNE 23rd DEC yesterday. Prices are already up the high $400's and more one way. J class is $890 one way. Last year VA dropped their prices around the 16th December by around $70 pp. I guess their greed at hiking prices as early as July for Christmas, had left them with a lot of empty seats....

I should have pointed out, travel will be right at the start of the month and not in the Christmas travel period, but I'm still worried that the price will only increase from now until then given it is that time of year.

I'm just about set to purchase now and hope no sale comes in. I thought that with the additional seats Qantas announces over the Christmas period may drop the prices but appears not to have had much effect.

The peak period normally starts about the 10th, before then there still may be sales?

Buy a refundable fare. If things change great. If not. You're already on the plane
