Last month I experienced an appalling flight connections transfer from T5 to T3 at LHR, with the s-l-o-w security guys going through everything in almost everybody's hand luggage. This trip I was facing the same connection again however the shuttle down from EDI wasn't included in my ticket.

I decided to try the train from EDI and Kings Cross, met a colleague for lunch and a drink nearby and eventually made my way to Heathrow on the HEX.

The F ticket on the train was £72 and the total trip on-board is 4 hours.

I've got to say I quite enjoyed it as a change! In F you get free breakfast & drinks, free WiFi, plenty of space and no security hassle. We arrived in Kings Cross bang on time and thanks to the adjacent St Pancras development there were reasonably good options for drinks. Later a couple of stops on the tube gets you to Paddington to catch the HEX direct to T3 with no flight connections!

Well worth considering if you have the time and fancy a change from yet another flight.

Cheers,
Steve.

I did the opposite - Kings Cross to EDI. Bought cheap tickets early for £10, missed it by a couple of minutes (going to blame it on SO's bathroom time in the morning :)), and had to shell out £116 for the next train. On the way back down we were in BMI Y, which wasn't too bad.

That said, the trip was fantastic. I do miss European train travel ... CountryLink just doesn't cut it
