Hi All,

This is my first post on the forum and there's a lot riding on it........a carton of beer!

The way all Australian disputes should be settled..

So the question came up with a mate at an Aus. day BBQ about the current total number of Velocity Platinum members there are.

So far I have found nothing on this forum or anywhere else with even a rough estimate.

Does any one have this answer or where to find it?

At the sake of making myself look like I idiot and having my head in the sand I will refrain from disclosing my estimate until I can get a credible number.

Cheers in advance!

Dan

Anything will be a guess, and while we have members who may work for Velocity, that sort of information being revealed would be something of a career limiting move I suspect.

You probably need to specify if the number is needed before or after the current dsc status runs happening :P

Wow that high?
1% is not many, but when you're talking about ~3 million Velocity members, it adds up.

QF is around the same (last time they actually quoted figures, which was quite a long time ago, but as they have over 10 million, they have a lot more based on that same 1-2%).

My guess is 1-2% of members or around 30 - 70k people
Do you think it is that high with Velocity? I would have thought the number of VA Platinums would have been less but we don't really have reports of the actual number so anything is a guess.

Yeah JohnK, I tend to agree with you. I was thinking that it may be more like .5% = 5 in every 1000 members who are signed up to VFF.

Based on the size of the lounges, and the number of WP bag tags I see on bags in there, i'd say it's pretty accurate. Of course, there will be the WP's who dropped to SG who haven't changed tags, but without a J lounge to differentiate the levels, it's tough to tell.

I'd say there's a far higher number of SG in terms of percentage in Velocity than Qantas, mainly due to it being so much easier to attain for a purely domestic flight-heavy pax, but WP is also much easier to attain and keep.

1% of 3.7m Velocity members = 37,000
QF Plat numbers are around 80-85k out of 9.5m which is ~0.8%

I agree Velocity likely has a higher gold% base than QF given that it's given out so freely and very easy to obtain through domestic Y travel

QF has much bigger international network and SC earning OW partners so a little easier to get QF status on long haul & partners[= more high plat members]. QF 9.5 members is skewed by Woolworths everydayrewards card.

I'd say at least 40% of the people in the lounges are VA plat and that is based on seeing many boarding passes with Platinum written on them, not the bag tags.

Keep in mind that VA platinum is also not that hard to maintain in comparison to Qantas with an average level of domestic flying combined with 1-2 international trips.

Gold is indeed a harder one to work out but i'd say it wouldn't necessarily be bigger than QF given the QF Pub (not the business section) can be pretty darn busy (at least at Mel) plus QF also has the lifetime golds.

You have to remember that you can't base your estimate on how many people you see with platinum boarding passes or tags as by default these people are going to be flying more often and therefore have more presence. Based on my own travel I rack up about 2500 Sc's (dependent on DSC promos and timing of) in a year so my presence in the lounges is going to be around 4-5 times more than a gold member.

I didn't attempt to estimate how many members are platinum in general, just how many I reckon are in the lounge when i'm there. :)

I have exactly the opposite impression, I am always surprised how many Golds and how few Plats I am observing in the lounge or on board, or even within the company I work for. And as DirkDiggler points out, Plats fly on average at least 2x as much as Golds so if you observe the same number of Golds and Plats the "true" ratio is more likely 1/3 Plat and 2/3 Golds in member numbers. But it's not so easy of course.

One other thing to remember when comparing % of total members with QF is that VA still has a lower proportion of business travellers than QF and more leisure pax who fly less often and therefore I'd assume they have a much higher proportion of Reds. But then QF has the Woollies EDR partnership...

Another source to get an indication would be the flight manifest which sometimes one can have a peek at during service. On a SYD-MEL flight, weekday night 5:30pm departure on a full E190 a few weeks ago, there were 0 VIPs (i.e. The Club), 4 Plats incl myself and ca. 15 Golds. Can't remember if it showed Silver.

Not surprising we go under the radar. WPs are far, far too classy to put those vulgar tags on their carry-on. Exactly the sort of behaviour thing one would expect from an SG though :p

Agree, what sense does it make to wear it on hand luggage except showing off.

However, I am wearing my own "WP" tag, not the vulgar VA one though, but my "W....r Pukeko" one :

So watch out people...

I know everything is relative but I have been in the OOL lounge on a Friday night with 2-3 SYD flights, a MEL flight and a CBR flight and there are 4-5 people in the lounge. There are times where I have been on my own.

Look at the Qantas lounge with only 1 flight but admittedly there are also other JQ flights. Almost always full.

Was on a SYD - OOL yesterday around 3pm departure.
Had a peek at the paperwork on the service trolley during service and counted around 20 plat and 10 gold pax, which surprised me , considering the time of day
