Yes not surprised. I was there for a few weeks in October 2005 for an Italian course at the Dante Alighieri and while one visited the Piazza, one ate far away as it's one of the most expensive tourist traps in Tuscany. :D

While Florence is 15C, Siena is 14th C. For us the most beautiful cathedral in Italy is in Siena. Planned to be larger than the cathedral in Rome, construction stopped after the Black Death in 1348. The inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy and are uncovered only for 6-10 weeks a year usually during September.
