As Airbus moves closer to announcing a reengining of its A320 narrowbody jet, John Leahy, the company’s chief operating officer, says he expects Boeing to follow suit with a 737 reengining announcement by year-end. But that’s not a given, counters Boeing Chairman, President and CEO James McNerney.

In an interview with Aviation Week & Space Technology, McNerney says Boeing may choose to wait a few more years — effectively leaving the market to a superior A320 for several years — if it believes it can bring a brand new 737 to market by the end of the decade. “I think our customers will wait for us,” McNerney tells Aviation Week & Space Technology.

I had a dream before financial realities of fuel pricing that we could get a Mark II version of the Concorde style to remove the tyranny of distance.
Instead we will be getting lighter more fuel efficient planes that dont go any faster but can hang in the sky for a day or more to get to a destination.
Maybe the technology to improve the air quality on board these new composite material planes will help us with our jet lag and they will be the dream come true.
Putting new engines in a plane is a great way of extending series of a model to avoid having to fully re-engineer a model that works ok. Due to the 787 delays it will be a long time before Boeing has a shot at something that wonderfully radical.
