I am looking to book 2x business flights from Brisbane to New York in early September (leaving around ~7th) and coming home ~22nd.

Fares look reasonable enough until it comes time to add the Singapore - Brisbane leg. No matter what I do, I can't find one that doesn't increase the fare by ~$3k a person!

Availability looks fine according to Expert Flyer and I've tried all sorts of combinations of ports etc. to work out what it might be but it seems no combination can stop it by jumping up that much.

Anyone have any ideas of what to try or what they would do?

Seems about standard.

Think about taking a cheaper flight out of Oz perhaps.

It's the Oz tax but $3k is standard in J on that route with SQ (arguably it's cheap).

Ah right. Didn't realise! I must have gotten very lucky previously then.

I did some more searching last night and as long as either outbound or inbound is in premium economy, the price stays around where I was hoping so it doesn't seem specific to the Australian legs and appears to be a pricing rule which might be the Oz tax you describe then.

What about just booking to Singapore then picking up an economy flight home?
The fare ex-SIN is comparable to ex-BNE so long as I do either outbound or inbound in premium economy.
