In my other thread, I asked about tipping when having complementary breakfast.

Now, how much do people tip in Australia for valet parking?

And what's the going rate for having luggage brought to your room?

When in Rome...

Australian Hotel Hospitality jobs pay a much higher minimum wage than their USA equivalent counterparts. Tipping is not expected here, and indeed the smallest amount that folds is $5. This is the real reason the $1 bill will not vanish from the USA for quite some time. It's easier to hand over a few folded bills than a few coins. Much more discrete.

For something that is so common in the USA, discussing tipping certainly is a taboo subject i've noticed.

If you really want to tip in Australia, it is of course not shunned. Tip for excellent service, after all, that's what it should be for IMHO (and I always to tip for said reason).

Yep tipping in AU is completely up to you.
Personally I don't tip at all unless the service truely is extrodinary.

Don't tip in Australia. It's not expected or a lot of cases, desired. I was on a tour in Melbourne when some continental European tourists were trying to hand a fist-full of coins to the tour guide. Made a fool of themselves.

In Australia if the price says $10, you only have to pay $10.

There are no tips, all taxes (GST which is 10% throughout Australia) must legally be included in the displayed price, and things that are free or complementary are infact free or complementary. You will not be expected to pay in any more.

Unless paying by credit card, where a % may be added ... :rolleyes:

For Australia, I'm generally in the no tipping school, with two exceptions ..
1) Leave small change for taxi drivers (unless they've deliberately gone the long way/lied to me/or committed one of several other sins)
2) Exceptional service in restaurants - reward with a small tip, up to perhaps 10% for really good service (certainly wouldn't think of 20%). But bearing in mind more expensive restaurants often have higher staff:customer ratio, which you are paying for, so better service should be expected.

Nothing; this is not the States (which i have been told some waiters earn $2 per hour PLUS tips - slave labour alive and well??), these people here earn enough to get by.

SPRUCE:rolleyes::rolleyes::eek:
