Tiger to charge for checked baggage from today

Looks like TT are pulling a reverse JQ when it comes to luggage policy.

Carry on baggage is still free (up to 7kg), but checked luggage will incur charges for all bookings made from today.

New Luggage Upsize™ Policy

From 29 May 08, we're revamping our Luggage Upsize™ policy to give you even more choices on how you want to fly. When you book from this date onwards, you can save by travelling light with up to 7kg of hand luggage free, or choose to pay an affordable fee when flying with checked luggage.

Charges are based on the weight of the luggage you're checking in, so how you fly now lies in your hands — only pay for what you want, rather than for a service you may not need.

What You Need to Know

Passengers can select their luggage requirement during the online booking process, or while booking via the call centre. If you do not pre-select your luggage allowance during the online booking process, you have two options:

• Phone our call centre at least 72 hours prior to departure, or
• Upsize your luggage at the airport during check in. Please note - you can only select up to 15kg. Anything in excess of 15kg will be subject to excess luggage charges per kilogram.

You are therefore encouraged to book your luggage requirements online at the time of making your flight booking to enjoy the lowest rates, as doing so at the airport will cost more.

As long as they don't pull the stupid stunt Jetstar does now and market ALL their fares without baggage. The lead-in airfare or advertised airfare must be the "with baggage" airfare - to cater to the needs of the majority of flyers - not just the scattered few who travel without bags!

Update: Looks like they will play the same game as Jetstar and cater to the minority. All for the sake of advertising a fare that on the surface may appear to be lower.

OK... this is annoying, as TT is the only major domestic jet airline that won't let me wheel my bag on board AND have a personal item. So I am forced to check the damn bag. Plus, I can not find a way to come in under 7kg... just not gonna happen.

JQ I can do at 10kg. At QF, even though they weigh my bag if I go anywhere near a check-in counter, the only real issue is on turbo-props, but at least QF does a half-hearted "premium hand luggage" delivery to you on the tarmac, at your arrival port. (Perhaps QLink could send someone over to AEagle to find out how "bag concierge", at the arrival port, should operate - i.e. swiftly.) I can't recall any issues on DJ either.

About a dozen TT flights purchased & still to go, unlikely to be many more if they are intent on sticking rigidly to the "Ryanair model" - 'til death do they part.

I have flown Tiger from ADL to MEL twice. Both times the plane was very empty. Strangely passengers were seated next to each other!?!

I realise this is very limited and anecdotal evidence, but I am wondering how long they can sustain this. One other passenger said she flies once a week on tiger to see her daughter and finds it always empty, but at $40 each way, she thinks it is a bargain.
The $40 fare was also a reason for me to fly - makes the numbers look good for the boss.

The baggage charge is probably a measure to get some revenue.

As for Tiger, the seating is very tight and the walk from the plane in MEL is quite long and outside under a rudimentary shelter open on one side.

Every time I've been on a TT flight it's been at least 80% full. Having said that, I haven't flown on all of their routes (my last flight with them was to CBR, not ADL as your example comes from.)

I don't know anything about Tiger's yield or revenue management, but with the backing they have, I doubt they'll be moving anywhere anytime soon.

I have flown on some rather empty QF flights between ADL and MEL as well, particularly on the weekend (weekday flights more full). It may be that particular timings that you are on are just not so popular as other times/

Spot on dajop. What's $5 for baggage when the alternative is over $200 more expensive?

In fact, given Tiger's generally lower prices, this is almost excusable. Almost.

It just seems unnecessary and hypocritical given Tiger's criticism of JQ's introduction of Jetsaver Light.

Remember they had that '$9.95, BAGGAGE INCLUDED!' sale as a response?

There is a subtle difference between TT charging as an add-on and JQ charging as a different fare type. Thats a load of BS what you stated there. Every 'short haul' flight that JQ operates has atleast 55% of all people take carry-on baggage only.. For example, syd-avv, syd-ool, bne-syd, mel-ool, adl-avv, avv-bne, all atleast have 80-100 take the LITE option (this would obviously be on full flights)..
