In light of Tiger's recent spike in the baggage fees in excess of Ryanair levels, and probaly in response to demand they have come down.

Webcheckin Pre-paid $10 (previously $20)
15kgs baggage $10 (was $28)
20kgs baggage $17.50 (was $33)
25kgs baggage $30 (was $50)
30kgs baggage $60 (was $70)

Jetstar have also upped the ante on their domestic rates to $15 for 20kgs on some routes.

No wonder people are turning away from TT with these crazy charges.
Tiger $29 MEL-SYD + $28 luggage + $7.20 credit card fee = $64.10
Jetstar $45 MEL-SYD + $10 luggage + $3.50 credit card fee= $58.50
Virgin $55 MEL-SYD + $10 luggage + $4.50 credit card fee= $69.50
Qantas MEL-SYD $69 sale fare with the lot $76.70

Tiger $29 OOL-SYD + 28 luggage + $7.20 credit card fee = $64.10
Jetstar $39 OOL-SYD + $10 luggage + $3.50 credit card fee= $52.50
Virgin $50 OOL-SYD + $10 luggage + $4.50 credit card fee= $64.50

Now who on earth would be choosing Tiger with those examples, especially families.

A family on a (short/medium) holiday is unlikely to have any more than 1 or 2 pieces for check-in, so there are still savings possible.

One could say they didn’t reduce surcharges so much as dropped their increases :p

Good Examples.
Yes, I claimed exactly that - that the others were cheaper often. If they are still running that $20 web checkin scam, well then they are MORE expensive.
Throw in unreliability, extra checkin time, and the walk of shame, less seat room, less times/flexibility delayed flights, and they are untenable for a tight schedule.

Tiger's new motto was 'Why bother" or 'You will pay - more'.

If you looked, you would notice that AUSTRALIA was double similar overseas flights, for everything, plus the 'experimental' $20 web checkin fee.

Still Tiger are still mad as hatters. I suspect 90% of punters will NEVER choose Avalon if there is a chance of no Melbourne public transport - meaning touchdown 9.30PM latest. I see a CBR to AVV is on the cards- sorry extra $7 plus another 30 minutes = dealbreaker. As the CBR to MEL flight has been >2 hours delayed before - leaving me with a $50 taxi bill after midnight, it would be a $120 mistake if the plane was delayed. Tell em they are dreaming. I predict the CBR-AVV route will die quick enough after AFL season ends.

Why pay $30 for a ticket, then $20 bus to City, and another MET zone ticket to where you are going. Only good for if you have your own transport, or more than a short hop flight. Have baggage? Forget it.

Also some new 'unfair terms' laws are coming in, which may hit CC slugs and car hire companies in the nose.

Well for people who don't have check-in luggage and can do web check-in, it is great to get these low fares from TT. In fact, I used to fly them, and the cheapest I paid was SYD-ADL $19 one way. Of course now I stopped flying with TT once I got bitten by their cancellation of my last SYD-ADL flight. I did get my money back though, after 6 weeks.

Having just booked a JQ light fare(unfortunately no other choice) i got socked a $3 fee for a standard seat selection.Cant remember that one before. But then getting mrsdrron to tassie next week this morning there were light fares on the 2 MEL flights for the day but tonight only a jetflex fare on 1 of the flights so she is going DJ.

Seat selection is free at web check-in, I've never had trouble getting good seats for nothing....everyone must use the auto-checkin and get computer assigned seating:rolleyes:

Its already axed before it has commenced. Not going ahead.

I believe it. You would THINK they would have some some pre-market research before jumping. Putting two third world airports (in terms of transport options) together (AVV and CBR) was always going to be a mistake.

Despite my disgust at the practices of TT and my reluctance to fly with them unless all else fails I can't believe that right now I'm sticking up for them. Anyway I would like to make a small correction to the above.

TT do not charge for Webcheckin as shown above. They charge for airport check in if you have carry on baggage only which is $10. The charges are as follows:

Webcheckin with Carry On Only (10kgs) Free
Airport Checkin with Carry On Only (10kgs) $10.00
Airport Checkin with 15kgs luggage $10.00
Airport Checkin with 20kgs luggage $17.50
Airport Checkin with 25kgs luggage $30.00
Airport Checkin with 30kgs luggage $60.00

Even with this little correction I would still avoid them unless I have no other choice. I used them once, late both ways.

Cheers,

Boof

I wonder how long it will be before an Australian carrier follows the Southwest model (instead of the Ryan Air/Easy Jet models)

In memory of a red-headed national embarrassment: PLEASE EXPLAIN!

Easy to say when choosing a select bunch of samples. The majority of the time Tiger is still far cheaper when I checked. Recently some of my family went to Alice Springs, you could book on Tiger for $80 just a few weeks before, plus $28 baggage charge. Qantas wanted $300 one way. for a family of 4, return tickets plus baggage on that example was $2400 with Qantas or about $860 with Tiger....

How much do you think the Melbourne SKYBUS is in comparison?

Parking is cheaper at Avalon, there is a huge Geelong market who absolutely would choose Avalon every single time over going to Tullamarine. Plus the massive amount of Melburnians who live along the westgate and princes fwy down to Werribee.

Im a Qantas platinum and Star Alliance gold card holder but guess what, I use Tiger at least 6 times a year and they suit me just fine, but then again, I'm not as precious as some around here.

Isn't Virgin Blue already using the "Southwest model"? By that I assume you mean a low-cost carrier that isn't low on customer service (or something). Cheap, but not so cheap as to be more hassle than its worth.

Something that Southwest does that Virgin Blue doesn't is have free-for-all seating. To me, this is a cheap and nasty tactic that is designed to make an airline appear cheap because they don't spend money on allocating seats. But does it really save any money? Some people like it but I don't see how it benefits the customer at all. I guess the other thing that Southwest do is fly into "secondary" airports. This doesn't really apply in Australia because apart from Avalon in Melbourne, Australia doesn't really have any.

So I think the only thing that Southwest does different to Virgin Blue that actually benefits the passenger is not charge extra for checked baggage. Maybe I am missing something? But yeah, I don't see how Southwest is actually any better.

Well, their guide Here Tiger Airways still says $20 and
"Please make sure to select this pre-paid fee when you are booking your fights as the fee will be A$25 if you decide to check-in at the airport without having selected this option on the website."
So $25 if you loose that bit of paper - I don't think you can re-print - why is that I ask cynically?

Condition: Any children under 14 on this flight reservation are accompanied by an adult over 18 years of age on the same reservation**. Or Prams or Infants or disabled.
Web Check-in opens 7 days and closes 4 hours before your scheduled departure.
(but never delayed time)

Same Reservation. No need for that. Tricky. So if Aunty Nora decides to take Mary Jane but Bill pays for it - tough - that's $25 sucker.

I believe Tiger loves to discriminate against Women and Children.
Mothers can't make web checkin declarations for minors, and they were making brisk money charging families $20 extra for each kid, oh and the stroller that's another 3Kgs over. So now its $10 per kid? I suspect they still would make the same wheelchair coughoo that Jetstar made.

And they can SLUG you twice if you missed that 45 minute requirement!!
Oh and another $70 each or whatever they feel like. They don't take excuses, only money.

I reckon I am savvy and wise and a good planner and not a 'late' person. As a last resort I book and avoid their traps too. All but the canceled flight trick they pull from time to time.

Because TT won't take responsibility for their own actions or own delays, I won't book MEL->PER->SIN-> elsewhere they can forget about getting me on the east coast. I just use Jetstar or use Jetstar to price Match.

I dont have much evidence to the contrary, but been told they are more reasonable on HKG routes, as that market does punish loss of face big time.

*PRICE MATCH ** that's all they are good for.

I think you need to read that link again. It says that web check in is free

It also says:

You may also reprint your boarding pass afterwards by going to the web check-in page and entering your details again.

And of course, one can always print the BP to a pdf.

That's a pretty significant difference. However, there's more than that. One thing is just the general flexibility of cancelling and re-booking - no charges, and it's straightforward to do. Very consumer friendly.

Remains to be be seen if the reprint feature works right up to the 45 minute mark or past in case of delay. The whole concept is creepy and exploitative to the bogon classes that a semi computer literate, and will ignorantly click on anything - just like farmers jumping at Swiss denominated loans.

I also heard TT telling the punters it MUST be on paper - no good on an iPhone.
Where is a printer in T4? No there is None. Try finding a printer at Melb Airport -Ha ah $25 punk.

And of course $25 for 'forgot it' for standard checkin is daylight robbery.
Re: Trade Practices Amendment (Australian Consumer Law) Act (No. 1) 2010.
is getting fired up for testing. We can test the word 'free' too, as in NRMA free.
I understand there must be a checkin process with the ticket, so this could be challenged.

There is also security talk of doing away with self checkin, especially when duplicate boarding passes led to all sorts of real and imagined issues.

I also note Tigers use of the word 'Tax' could be construed as deceptive - they should be taken to task again on this one.
