Hi there AFF brains trust

Have an upcoming work trip (booked all in J)

QF MEL/SYD dep 6am arr 725
connecting to
JL SYD/Haneda dep 0915am

The connection is a little tight but it is booked in J and my bags will be checked through...

Am I right in assuming I don't get the QF seamless transfer because I'm not flying QFi out of Syd?

Thanks for your thoughts on this one....

If you get denied the transfer, the train would cost you an extra 5 minutes tops. Might even be quicker as the trains are more frequent. (The way the website is written it's open to oneworld flights too but lots of wiggle room for them to deny you due to capacity restraints)

The transfer doesn't save much time D to I, just a bit of walking - still the same security and passport queues in the I terminal.

I'd be OK with it, early morning flights shouldn't be delayed considerably unless there's fog etc.

Thanks @justinbrett

Normally I wouldn't blink at this transfer time, but 'covid era'.... I tend to double check things nowadays.

I was sure I've done a QF-AA via the QF seamless transfer ages ago, but couldn't remember for sure.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the train schedule now too.

Whilst tight, I’d be comfortable with this connection and would probably use the train if refused QF bus. As you’re flying JQ J you’ll also have access to what was formally the ‘Express Path’ channel when going through security screening as well, which is now reserved for pax flying Business/First and on imminently departing flights.

JL - not JQ.

Japan Airlines.

JQ?! Wash your mouth out ;)

Flying Japan Airlines :)

But thank you @dylarr .... I actually haven't used the 'enhanced' express path at Sydney yet, hopefully it is FAST! (and open that
morning....)

I've also looked up the train timetable as well, looks pretty frequent as a back up.

Excuse the JQ freudian slip! 🤣🤣

My experience using the 'enhanced' express path has been positive and the fact that you are eligible to use it should provide some comfort. When security has been rammed with pax it has absolutely helped get through quickly and has been operational at times where it matters the most.

Have done this transfer from QF domestic to non-QF international, and it was fine provided luggage was checked through..
My understanding is the Qantas transfer bus is available when either arriving or departing flight is with Qantas.

The priority screening lane (formerly “Express Path“) will be operating - morning still seems to be peak T1 departure period. It really kicks off from about 8am thru 11am/noon but the priority lane (and even non-priority) are coping much better now than they were last year.

I flew out to CHC mid Dec. Arrived around 8am, travelling in whY (no priority access) but thru pretty quickly - not like the 2 hrs it took me back in June.

Should be out of fog season by then but if there was an unexpected pea souper, your arriving JL plane might be in BNE when you get to SYD…
