I'm in the process of scanning all my Grandpa's 35mm Slides as he was a keen photographer. So it's been great seeing some old family photos etc.

anyway I'm only part of the way through when I saw some plane photos (my grandparents never flew). And although it's only outside shots, i thought I would share them here!

I think these were taken at Sydney Airport. not sure who was exiting the plane, but it was good to see Ansett!

so does anyone else have any old time photos to share?

And the 727 still exists at BNE airport (the very one you have a picture of with the stairs).

You're making me feel old..... I remember a school excursion to Canberra (about 76 or 77?)

That 727 looks awfully like the one we flew in....

Great photos.

I'm in the same boat. I've got a box full of photos (and negs) and slides to digitise.

The end result will be gratifying but the the scanning process may well kill me. I've just spent the last year digitising all our paper documents (well not all yet, I've still got a few reams to go).

When I was a young lad, I went to ADL on a 727, and when we went to CBR it was a Fokker Friendship. As a kid looking at the props and landing gear was so cool. These days it would be "can someone stop that damn noise!"

Nice to see the old photos.

Brings back memories.

I don't want to advertise for any company, but I've just got all the back issues of a scientific journal scanned. It was surprisingly cheap. Approx. $1200 including book scanning for our rare issues, plus bookmarking of articles. Text searchable database on DVD/CD provided. Straight scanning without the extras would of been about $400 or $500, at a guess. Page number was about 2000 to 2500.

This has got me really wanting to scan dad's pictures in now....

That's a good price medhead.

I scanned these on a Nikon Coolscan LS-5000 which is a fairly high end scanner. I just do a few in each night in between doing other things.

I have found a place in the US that will scan all formats, works out to be about 21 cents per scan. However you need a us mailing address for them to send it back to.

MyUS.com / Amex ???

My Canon Multi Function can scan slides in and does the job very well - I purchased it for $400 during Amex Dick Smith promotion a few years ago.

My Father was also a keen Slide photographer (and projectionist ), but there are several thousand.

How the world changes.

Flew out from UK in the 70s arrived into Sydney on a Qantas 707 then took Ansett 727 to Melbourne then onto Adelaide again on Ansett. What sweet memories.

Long Live Ansett :D

A few years ago, The Comedy Company did a skit about Uncle Arthur and his home videos.

It is so easy to take photos now and show everyone, take a photo with your IPhone and stick it on Facebook in about 2 seconds.

Was over my dad's recently and found this booklet amongst all the stuff he keeps on Perth Airport when it celebrated 50 years 1944-1994... Was thinking about maybe scanning it in if anyone was interested but here is a pdf of it online, although the photos aren't too clear it has some older ones of Perth and the planes that used to come here... Even seems my great Grandad started up Woods Airways back in 1948... From the document

July 2 1948 Woods Airways Pty Ltd begins Perth-Rottnest Island service with Avro Ansons. The 42 kilometre route (the only one operated by the airline) makes it the world's smallest air service

Another interesting snippet wwas this

It can handle two departing, two arriving and one transiting Boeing 747s simultaneously in one hour. The generous provision of counters and customs-immigration desks in each area allows for up to 750 departing and 1,110 arriving passengers to be checked through in one hour.

Here's the web address for it anyway if anyone is interested...

Yes they ship out a container to put everything into, then to send it all back. So I figured I'd send it through the forwarder if need be.

Issue I have found with the flatbeds is they aren't really designed for negs or slides. especially when you want high res files so the quality isn't there. I'm doing most of these at 3000dpi which makes around a 30mb file. I can do 4000dpi but that is getting a big big for my needs and takes longer. The scanner also has digital ICE which does an amazing job of removing scratches and dust as well as restore colours.

First SYD to MEL flight was in a Fokker Friendship, and our honeymoon flight was on a 707.

Where's the hell is my walking frame?

Seriously, I wish I took photos of those planes. They were merely a means to an end in those days.

Given your profession, anything less than 1200dpi would be anathema to you (and even that 'low' a resolution might be pushing it :p).

Yes, my flatbed only does 600dpi, but has a special holder to 35mm negatives and slides -- six at a time for negatives and four at a time for slides (you can also make prints from slides and negatives).

There are plenty around, there has always been a romance about flying, perhaps not so much these days. There are not many 20 year old pieces of machinery that have the ability to bring traffic on General Holmes Drive in Sydney to a standstill when they came in to land at Sydney, the Concorde did that every time, as did the Buffs, which are unique in having a service life that will almost be 80 years!

Ahh yes you are right there serfty! :p I did scan some family portait pics last night, did it at 4000dpi. 60mb files! but the quality was stunning on some of them. Pity i haven't found more plane pics!

The problem is that there wasn't really such a thing as a compact camera back then where you could take a photo and then see the result.

Is something like that still around a scanner that allows you to scan negatives and slides.

Aside from the high end ones, here are a couple of options:

Canon:

http://www.canon.com.au/Home-Office/Faxes-Scanners/CanoScan-Scanners/5600F

Epson:

Perfection V500 Photo Specifications - Epson Australia

there are some dedicated scanners still. I've not tested any so cannot comment on the quality:

Otek 3-in-1 Slide, Photo and Film Scanner (PS979) | Buy Photo/Film Scanner Online - oo.com.au

35mm Film & Slide Scanner with 2.4' LCD Screen | Buy Photo/Film Scanner Online - oo.com.au

One thing the cheaper scanners don't have is Digital ICE. This removes dust and scratches from the scan extremely effectively. save trying to touch it up in PhotoShop.

IIRC, they used to stop the traffic on General Holmes Drive whenever a plane landed.
