I can't see why you'd return the card. If simpler and fairer is really that much of a problem for you simply don't book with QF if you have a choice. QF will quickly get the message.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yep. No need for histrionics.

Why would someone return their QFF card? Is that like a slap in the face?

Excuse my ignorance, is the Simpler and Fairer changes - reducing the status credits earnt on flights?

Yes, "Simpler and Fairer" are simply another one in QF's history of re-purposing positive words for negative news rather than simply using the much more honest words "to be honest, we're screwing you over something chronic with this change"

was it Qantas - or was it Ansett that a number of years ago swapped points for kms to points for miles flown?

Haven't ( and won't) returned card, will do utmost to requalify for WP in the 14/15 year so that I / we can have best chance to secure J classic return to LHR (x 3) seats in 2016. ( my 60th Birthday) After that I will probably just fall away to "not much" status after that. Points earn ( for me) is not hard,( I can rack up a few hundred thousand non flying annually) it's SC's that are going to be difficult to earn.
As a QP life I shall always have basic lounge access, and so i will fly less often and will endeavour to fly in J classic award on long haul .
So QF will find my " Simpler, fairer" self will be seen less often flying anywhere.
I don't know how representative I am of those affected by these enhancements to the programme, but it seemed to me at the time, that qantas were really just doing this to stop the savvy flyer from using their system.
The irony of that is (IMHO) the simpler fairer rules don't actually improve anyone's lot in real terms.
AFF types will look elsewhere for their "best deals" the unaware traveller will continue on as before.
And someone in qantas loyalty will have the satisfaction of knowing that a small, but active chunk of loyal pax will take their loyalty elsewhere.

Qantas did that a long time ago - can't comment on Ansett as I was never an Ansett FF member. Earning rates change from time to time, based on lots of different things. So while the base rate dropped from 1.6 points per mile to 1 point per mile, other things like minimum points earn (1000 points) and status bonus came into play after the km-mile rate change. Swings and roundabouts. Some were winners, some were losers, and in most cases it varied depending on the specific flight you took.

Some people will always kick and scream when benefits decrease, no matter what benefits may have increased over time. Its human nature. We take the good (increased benefits) as a "right" and dwell on the down-side as a source of angst. I look at it all as a bit of "ho-hum". I would prefer to see the airlines making a profit via sustainable programs, rather than bleeding financial losses through unsustainable attempts to woo and/or retain customers through crazy fares, gifts and other incentives (I nearly used the word bribes, but that may be a little too emotive to describe FF programs on AFF ;) ).

Remember, we all have a choice. We can choose to be a member of an FF program or not. Nobody is forcing anyone to be a QFF member. If the program no longer works for you, change or just stop using FF programs. Just as I have changed banks or preferred grocery stores from time to time, I can do the same with FF programs, hotel loyalty programs etc (and I have).

But I have never returned a membership card. I just stop using that provider, with the option to return later if their program or my use/needs change later. The only ones I cancel are those that incur an ongoing membership fee.

Actually they do improve things for the targeted group - particularly those traveling on QF flights in fully flex economy domestically and business internationally.

In any event after lots of consideration, for me it's not the earn side of the ledger that's the problem. It's the spend side - with insanely large copayments on economy fares and very limited premium cabin availability I've concluded that Qantas Link is the best value now and there's only so many of those flights you need. So it's really the spend side that's stopping from ever wanting to earn a QF FF point again.
