We are currently in NZ and picking up a hire car tomorrow. The car we have hired has a $3,800 excess included we have a $5,000 excess cover on our Travel insurance (Qantas through QBE).

When we hired the car through Airport Car Rental - we were phoned and asked if we wanted to have 3rd party insurance and if we did, then we should ring our Travel Insurer and check if we were covered.

I did, and the Excess Hire car does not cover 3rd party.

I paid for the extra insurance and now have full insurance for our Hertz hire car through Airport Car Rental (~$180 for 11 days).

My question is - can anyone tell me if I had an accident in NZ that caused 3rd party damage (eg other car, shop window, person etc etc). Would our Australian license cover this?

I am quite confused - we have hired cars on multiple occasions, in multiple countries and I have never thought about 3rd party insurance before.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Wouldn't you just have standard comprehensive insurance on it?

There is no third party injury insurance in NZ as injury in car accidents is covered by ACCC.

I was about to say that, however have found booking with a .com address on AVIS even though I entered my wizard, it defaulted me to the US booking engine which adds all sorts of nasties into the booking

I wonder if you could ring up the likes of AA Insurance and take out a 3rd party policy on the/a rental car in NZ. That would only cost you $15 for a month, and can simply cancel after a month.

Have bought a car in NZ for a months usage, to sell it after a month and 3rd party insurance for $15 ish for the month before.

Its ACC, not the ACCC

3rd party in NZ is a common insurance that means you are covered for any damage to other property when you are at fault in an accident.

Yes - my apologies - one too many Cs as I am more used to dealing with the ACCC these days vs ACC in the past.

I know third party damage is common in NZ - but my comment was directed at the fact that you should not need it if you have comprehensive at that would cover the property damage. Injury insurance is not required because of ACC.
