The view from my "office"

re: The view from my "office"

Wonderful Bruny Island, just a bit south of Hobart and very easy to get to. Last time we went there saw a guy on a SUP making the crossing from the mainland (Tassie).

Not surprisingly this stretch is known as the Neck. Not quite as artistic a photo as you sometimes see - but I was just happy to get to the top of the steps and get a shot with minimal humans in the way!

Cooky landed somewhere there didn't he? Also Billy Bligh in the Bounty and Abel 'Tassie' Tasman in 1642.

Hope you enjoyed the gourmet delights of Bruny.

Get Shucked oysters from Bruny are the freshest and best I have ever tasted. :)

re: The view from my "office"

Was the same for us until we went to coffin bay.

No, no. Tried both but Vancouver island oysters can't be beaten! :)

Yes we have had that argument before and I respectfully disagree.
Coffin Bay is a huge expanse of water with many distinct areas to grow oysters with a great variety of conditions. As well oysters grown from the Eyre peninsula are often sold as Coffin Bay oysters. The locals often say the very best oysters actually come from Cowell a hundred kms south of Whyalla.

On Vancouver Island you can taste the oysters from the different regions whereas in Australia this is impossible to do but believe me just trying"Coffin Bay" oysters you have not experienced the differences amongst the various growing regions or from different growers.

We disagree. Coffin bay oysters, as with Bruny island oysters can be good (actually wasn't much impressed with the ones from Bruny island oyster company shop), as sometimes Sydney Rock oysters and ones from Stradbroke, but nothing like as good as fresh from Vancouver island and Puget Sound. Obviously YMMV.

Ok.. Looks like it will be a worldwide quest ;):D
How are the Brittany oysters comparing?? Maybe we need a separate thread.. :D

I guarantee that it's up the right way. The smoke from the Sutton and Tarago fires had blown in and created the great colours. Fortunately, although there were stock and property losses/ no one was killed in the fires.

Summer again and the last couple of days was time for a little dabbling in a vineyard in the Wilyabrup part of the MR wine region. Wilyabrup is really MR central - think Cullen, Vasse Felix, Moss Wood, Woodlands...

Task was assessing a powdery mildew fungicide trial. Unlike the Botrytis (bunch rot) I've shown in previous seasons, powdery mildew occurs early in the season before veraison (colour change).

Healthy bunch:

Fairly heavy powdery mildew infection:

A bit of additional action at the site was a CSIRO/Curtin U project using a drone with multi-spectral scanner to take images of our plots for ground-truthing to see if they can detect the disease load. The white tile in the centre of the 'landing pad' is a very costly device for correcting imagery for changes in sun angle over the course of scanning runs.

Actually was a bit disappointed - too touristy. Whiskey sampling was poor - no service, way overpriced just to taste - so didn't hang around. Cheese company was OK for light lunch. Didn't get to the oysters sadly but had plenty of good ones in Hobart and Burnie.
