We spent a night in Invercargill in Dec 2019, on our South Island road trip....this turned out to be our last OS trip. Saw the whole town and even drove to Bluff to see SI before we drove to Queenstown. It was quite expensive to get the 4 of us to SI (ferry or plane) and as we were short of time, skipped it. Good on you for taking your grandma to see a place she wanted to go to.

It's a shame you didn't go! Yes, the ferry is a bit expensive but it's still a whole lot cheaper than getting to Lord Howe Island, and you get a similar experience

We met a few tourists on Stewart Island who had caught the ferry over in the morning for a day trip, returning in the afternoon.
