Hi all

Stumbled across this discussion on PPRuNe of an incident involving the ILS at Port Moresby which I thought you might enjoy/marvel at/be horrified etc

Port Moresby airport incident/s. - PPRuNe Forums

The ILS and runway lights went down, unfortunately no-one told the incoming flights until the pilots contacted the tower on their way in.

Next night "the female centre controller had an open mic on 123.4 for about 15 minutes while she chatted to her mates on the phone"

Equally disturbing things happen at OZ fields that go un-reported.

The flights into and out of POM are the least of your worries, it's whilst you are on the ground you should be concerned. Never has rotation felt so good.

Have you checked out their minerals :)

Yeah, like the well known environmental disaster aka Ok Tedi copper mine.

A country can still make a motza out of its natural resources but cry poor mouth at the same time. That or a small amount of vocal Dudley Doright's in Oz say we're not doing enough blah blah blah.

Don't know why we bothered, the Oz Govt still giving them money hand over fist.

Kevin 007 has announced another review of aid, and put Sandy Hollway on the case. Another review - yep, that'll fix things:rolleyes:

For the up and coming environmental disaster, google Ramu Nickel. Locals a bit antsy that they want to dump mine tailings in the bay:shock:

As an (almost) semi regular traveller to PNG, nothing surprises me. A totally corrupt country.

I work in PNG a lot, have done for years.
It is indeed the land of the unexpected.

Absolute lethargy combined with rampant corruption, mind numbing incompetence, greed and vicious jealousy rule all Govt Depts in PNG.
The mind set seems to be one of denial.
If the problem is ignored long enough, voila!
There is no problem.
The air services in country are abysmal.
With the huge increase in flights, freight&passengers through Jackson (POM)mainly due to the Liquefied Natural Gas projects,it is getting worse.

Ran into a friend at the airport who was working in PNG but now back in Oz & when I asked why he left POM replied "too many death threats". I said "what, from the locals" & he replied "nah, the Prime Minister"!

I F.I.F.O. Moro & POM. It is scary !

Here are just a few relayed to me by my staff and colleagues.

On the runway in CNS , had to turn back , carpet hanging out the stairway door flapping in the breeze.

Departed from Moro and turned around landed again , Not Enough Fuel.

Worst one , ANG Dash 8 trying to depart POM , a lot of RPM & front of the plane lurches skyward and crashes down again,,,,,,,,,,,,, chocks away,,,,,,, NO ! lusim ting ting ( forgot ) I have more including ones where I was a passenger but don't want to scare away the influx of expats coming in the PNG to work on the L.N.G. project.

I was robbed at gunpoint for a carton of cigarettes, $12 and a bag of lollies that was for the village children. The 3 young raskals let go a shotgun shell in our ears to prove they meant business.

Lovely country, unfortunately it is not going to get better.

Yep,
there are many, many more that are unreported.
The International flights aren't too bad, well, yeah, they are but nothing compared to in country flights.
You'll get on planes where most of the rivets are in "Egg" shaped holes and spin around, there are pigs all over the runway and the locals will go mental if you hit one,
the plane you are about to get on needs a jump start, the stink too, mustn't forget the sickening stench of unwashed National in a hot cabin.
The smell gets into the fabric in the plane, it cannot be removed.
The grime and lack of maintenance on nearly every plane here is shocking at first, they are like rundown council buses being piloted by the drunk, the deranged and the dedicated buai chewer.
I've been in two crashes in light planes, relatively unhurt in both, they ran off the end of the runway, three over water flights ending in single engine landings in Twin Otters, the Cessna Citation that was involved in the fatality at Misima, was on that a couple of days before, umm, the Kokoda crash, been on that plane many times.
I love P.N.G and being here but geez, it's good to get home where most everything works.

Em i nogut tru!

Reminds me of a flight just after I arrived, late afternoon GUR-POM, A/C arrived late so took off in the dark on an unlit runway:o. Well I suppose we had headlights. En route my mate in seat opposite notes burning smell, points out smoke wafting from air vent. Not very much smoke is the decision, we'll have a look at POM.:shock:

Theres a good video of a landing and takeoff at Fane on Youtube. You can't do it any more the airport is now unserviceable:-|
