the madness of ebay

Five hundred bucks, holy cough! That's all I got, Im in sticker shock.

I had a few extra Gold tags (the older style) from needing replacing to regaining Status at times. Aviation collectors seems to be happy to pay for many of the items we take for granted. And yes some of the prices people will pay astounds me no end.

I admit I had a rather condescending message from somebody telling me that I "shouldn't be selling them", "false representation" etc, as they would not allow any of the privileges that Gold membership provides (despite the listing *clearly* indicating that it wouldn't provide said privileges!!). Politely told them that collectors enjoy collecting stuff (and paying whatever they feel it's worth) and that they should make sure they read listings thoroughly, before making disparaging remarks to sellers about the items they are offering.

They sold for around $25 each - would I pay that much for a QF Gold Bag Tag? Hell no! But hey, to each their own - I know people who will happily part with $700 for a bottle of wine and drink it without batting an eye. At least with the bag tag, it'll last longer than one evening . . . . .

But if you're Bronze don't you have to pay to get tags anyway?

I thought it was around $50 a pair when they were first released? So isn't $25 each around the mark?

Not sure with the new tags - these were the old original business card sized "swing-type" tags that you wrote your details on.

I missed out on the new-style Platinum tags; they were introduced the year I dropped back to Gold. Would I pay for a pair - no thanks. Sure, they'd look nice on my bag, as a reminder of my WP status in years gone by, but I'd rather spend the cash on more important things like fine whiskey, some nice imported beer, or probably more importantly - a birthday gift for SWMBO. ;)

Apologies - I was thinking e-tags not the good old-fashioned plastic ones.

$500 is about how much a CL Q tag goes for though... it is what it is. I've also seen the P1 tags fetch close to that, but not tempted to operate a side business myself.

Obviously some people think it's worth paying for this stuff. When I asked QF why they started checking cards and BPs at the priority security queue even when a proper Qtag is attached to the bag I was told that too many people are using Qtags that don't match their real status.

We've sold our family ones as people move up and down the ranks.
Better to use the money for nice dinners as we travel vs Q tags that seem to be next to useless. And for nice coin earned, I can easily enough print off swing tags.

Indeed! ! ! !

Indeed, the one I use is RED :p

I still use my AN tags, and on the rare occasion will use the white hard plastic Golden Wings with the leather belt attaching it to the bag.

But i did loose one on my check-in and I still think it was stolen.

Madness alright.

Further down I notice 100,000 Velocity points for AUD1,800. Yeah right.

If only it was that easy :)

Ive got ~180,000 QFF id love to get out of (since moving my earn to VFF).... whittled my way down to almost zero earlier this year in preperation but points keep coming in, tempting me back.

Do qantas ever replace them if they are lost? Free or have to pay? I've often wondered esp if you have had status for years.

Yes they do, got a couple of gold tags for
knicks a few months back. Rang QFF stating
that one of my original tags was getting worst for wear.

No dramas, 2 new tags in the mail.

Every year when I get my Gold partners pass my wife gets a new set of tags, without fail. I asked for some replacements a few months ago as one did not work and the other was ripped off in BKK, and they are still coming in the mail.

So I'm using the wife's one now and she never lets me forget!!!
