Thinking of Qantas International today in light of recent announcements - felt a bit sad when I reviewed the routes they have pulled out of... there's probably way more.

Anyways I'm done... just wanted to vent in pictorial form!

SYD-ATH is another but I do not have any photos....

Maybe we should start a thread on suggestions for the new Head of International to improve their business model....

eg. why is QF72 now no longer a morning flight to Perth from Sing, but a 11.30pm flight that gets in at 4.40am...cant see anyone wanting to fly that time...i certainly dont...doubt it'll last long....another example of sacrificing International routes for Domestic scheduling...

Demise of Qantas, or reflection that international routes are super-competitive, and Qantas with a high dollar just can't compete? With the Big Q in private hands with aircraft which for the large part aren't suited to those routes under the current business model, it is limping. The big question is whether the 787 will see routes reopen?

Interesting - I wasn't aware that Qantas ever flew to Harare (and am still a little bit surprised that they ever did).

That's a very good idea.

My first piece of advice would be to go ahead with an EK arrangement. Get access to EK's network would be far more logical ex. Australia than relying on BA out of LHR for Europe.

A332's to Hawaii.

Sort the QF72 issue.

Fly to JHB direct from Per.

Harare (and Salisbury before it) was once a safe and dynamic city. With the immigration out of Zimbabwe in the 1980's it made sense to fly ex Harare.

QF stopped these flights when the situation in Zimbabwe deteriorated.

Today it would make sense to fly JHB or Cape Town to Perth - that's where the vast majority of RSA immigration is happening from.

Was in the era of sanctions against South Africa and before Zimbabwe became a total basket case. Died shortly after SA opened up and really not something i'd blame QF for cancelling.

I would love to see Qantas international continue and open up new routes but most believe the new aircraft will have an orange star on them in which case Qantas would lose me.

Never, ever as long as I still have half my sanity....

Excellent idea BobbyFlyer re: starting thread on suggestion to the new Head of Int'l....

Totally agree with you on the QF72, the re-timed 11.30pm is very inconvenient as I used the morning flight on a regular basis, but no more....

a company that listens to its customers. such a basic business requirement however arrogance often makes them deaf

Demise of QF - the high dollar should mean cheaper fuel and cheaper aircraft purchasing costs. Yes, international is super-competitive but if you do not react to competition, you demise - hence the share price at $1.10 now.

I enjoyed it, gave me enough time to relax in SIN and shower after having coming in from LHR instead of having to race onto the next plane and even gave me a "bed" in economy (4 seats to myself thank you very much :D).

I'm as concerned about the future of Qantas international as the next guy and agree the signs aren't promising. However, to be fair, Qantas has had some positives on the international front. I'm no expert but the following might be pertinent also:

  • Second or third carrier to take delivery of the A380
  • First (and currently only) carrier to fly the A380 Trans Pacific.
  • New routes to SCL and DFW.
  • First lounges in Sydney and Melbourne among the world's best
  • Investment in new or refurbished lounges in Singapore, Hong Kong and Los Angeles
  • Upgraded J.
Additionally, what about flights to Port Moresby, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown? I don't think they always existed.

And there are certainly other carriers that have or are cutting back. BA, for example, used to fly to a lot more cities in Australia than just Sydney.

Again, I'm concerned too but the argument should be balanced.

I believe it has to do with allowing for more conections ex-SIN (rather than ex-Australia). One upside is there seems to be faster arrivals at Perth's dismal international arrivals hall (customs, immigration and baggage). However, I also note that the usual QF78 departure at 7.30pm is now an A332 whereas previously it was an A333.

Qantas: who ran down the roo?

"To have a viable international full-service offering, Qantas needs new, more fuel-efficient aircraft and to fly the routes people want. The recent Qantas history has been one of surrendering routes one after the other and it is continuing to do so. On its current trajectory, Qantas' international network will consist of New Zealand - or less"
