Well guess what happened on the way to London from Hong Kong?

Arrive at HKG to check in 600AM, straight to Club desk, checking in and get asked if I would like to up grade to Business class, I say NO, it would not be fair on wife and son, but will if all 3 can go up, naturally. Oh OK, so they give us our Y tickets, and its off to the Club for breakfast, sitting in the club about 15 mins later get paged. CSA -"Due to overbooked flight we have upgraded the 3 of you to Business". Well wasn't that good. Hell yeah. Nice flight to Heathrow. :) :) :) 3 happy campers.

1 hr out of Heathrow and captain comes on "There has been an accident and ATC has asked them to slow down and get in the line to see if we can land, may have to divert" Anyway around and around London we go then finally get allowed to land. For those seasoned travellers on the board you know what Heathrow is like on a normal day. Well try and imagine now with all BA domestic short/medium haul flights cancelled or delayed, a number of International flights cancelled, all of them delayed, and no transfers occuring (everyone must collect bags). Not a pretty sight. And QF just dumping those 170 odd passengers on the flight who are marked for transfers (Manager of ground ops comes on plane advising passengers transferring to Europe to get Eurostar !!!!).

Now we were supposed to transfer to a BA flight to Aberdeen Scotland. We go from one desk to another only to be told different things at each one, backwards and forwards, total confusion all over the airport in every terminal. We stand in a line for 4+ hours after being told to wait to see what bus  they are going to put us on (@12-14 hour ride). Finally they tell us we have a flight, lets go, check bags back in and wait for 20 minutes on tarmac bus, then a further 30 minutes on the plane, and then we are off. Hooray. 1.5 hours later we are in Aberdeen. Go to collect bags, "Are you off BA 1316 ?" - "Yes" - "Sorry no bags were loaded for that flight, go to the counter and provide your deatils etc". Wife not happy!

Anyway next day now, and we were told to ring their baggage tracking mob if we hadn't heard from anyone prior to lunch. Rings up to be told "we see 2 of your 3 bags on the system, not sure about the 3rd one !!! The 2 should be there this evening! The 3rd one might be too"

So 3 smelly Aussies in my sisters house awaiting bags !

All this in the first 3 days of a 6 week trip !

Sounds like a fun trip ! so far a mix of the good and bad.
I am sure the rest will be better.

Your expereince is one of the reason i like to atleast carry a shirt and underware + some deorderant etc with me onboard. (And to have a shower in the lounge as well if thats possible or desired)

Not a good day to fly to LHR... good luck with the bags - that is not a fun experience. I now travel (when on business) with just hand luggage and when I go with mrssimongr on our trip next I will be travelling with with just the one checked bag just in case.

We also only have 1 transfer on the entire trip to make things easier :)

Good luck and dont let this ruin your trip - let it be a story to tell :)

All 3 of you got upgraded, so the universe was bound to expect some sort of karmic recompense...

Evan,

You realise what will happen don't you.

No upgrade and the bags will go for their own holiday anyway.

Oh yes, me too! ;)

(Now that I said it, I bet they'll lose my bags on my next trip - and no upgrade for me because it's on a LCC... gah, help me.)

You know on this trip i have 8 flights and i transit LHR 4 times !!! can you imagine the odds of my bags being lost ? and i think every single transit is between terminals as well !

Shall we start takeing bets ??? so far though the first transit went fine... they had plently of time to get my bags to the plane since i missed my original connection and so next one was like 6 hours later.

Dare I suggest hand luggage only?

I would if i could, but i can't :( I started this trip in Australia in December, then to Japan, Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, China, Germany, Singapore and who knows where else. A couple of months on the road. (hold on i live in a hotel !!, almost anyway)

But i am on the SIN-LHR-STR//FRA-LHR-PVG-LHR-FRA//STR-LHR-SIN leg so i may just take hang luggage only on the side trip to China. See how i go.

Of course your suggestion is welcomed :) its how i would usually travel if i can. Especially since i only wear Jeans & Polo to work.
