I really appreciated the Qantas 747SP. It was a favourite.
Next was the Singapore Air A340-500 all business class with about 100 seats. I would use two over to the US from Singapore.
Never did a Pan Am flight.

I flew Pan Am (but not the 747 or SP) in 1969/70. Those were the days when airlines gave you a full route map and even certificates for crossing the equator and the International Date line.

Well yes, but no

This was based on the full economy fare, or at least one of the higher economy fare buckets. Whereas the actual ecinomy sewting could be purchased at a discount… advance purchase or excursion rates as they used to be called.

I think when qantas first introduced business class it was for just 10% more than the economy fare. But again that wasn’t the ‘cheapest’ fares.

Similar pricing was advertised when TAA and Ansett introduced business class in Australia… it was just a small surcharge. Ansett at one stage was advertising first class for the same price as business, but the products were virtually indistinguishable anyway.

And then there was this. Can you imagine that now just get off the plane and get to your room and there’s your suitcase

Rose-tinted glasses though … five-star service used to cost a greater proportion of the median wage than it does now, air travel in Y in the early 70’s was more expensive than J now (yeah - odd concept but some of us don’t have points and think about fares in dollars ).
