Fuel surcharges in an opinion piece today:

It’s an obscenity that airlines continue the sham of fuel price surcharges in an underhanded attempt to blame the oil companies for their biggest operating cost.

The fact that the oil industry’s products exist in a global market completely devoid of price competition is a separate issue that has vexed competition regulators for decades.

The very definition of idiocy would be the ‘loyalty run’ where a customer deliberately spends hundreds if not thousands of dollars on a flight in order to retain the colour of a piece of plastic or qualify for the right to keep being robbed by ‘reward’ programs that are nothing more than data base ‘selling’ schemes.

Can add 'service fees' to classic awards to QF scam, which is really cost price recovery IMO.

Eg; I did SYD - BNE return for 16k points (Classic award) and $70. I have heard staff paying 'cost price' $70 return for that return flight.

Fuel surcharge is always a thorn in my side.

It is like paying for a hotel and then have to pay the electricity bill as well on top of your bill.
