The Australian Frequent Flyer Scavenger Hunt III

Yes, folks, it's on again. I don't know how I keep doing it, but here it goes....

For those of you who haven't seen the previous scavenger hunts, they can be found here (#1) and here (#2).

There are 50 items to be found altogether in this list, which once again was really tough to pull together. The scoring system will be given in a separate post, as will the list. I am endeavouring to keep this thread updated weekly. I'll be relying on the AFF Mods' graciousness to allow me to keep in email contact with them to update the headline posts of this thread! (The posts with the list and score quickly blew out the nominal character limit for a PM!)

The Rules
  • To find an item, take a photograph of it, upload it then post it back into this thread with the relevant detail required. (If you do not have a space to upload it, I can upload it to my FT Galleries space, just PM me).
Note that some items require more than one photograph, and some you may want to take more than one photograph to ensure the find is convincing.
  • What you need to post for a find (apart from the photos of the found item)
    • The name and item number of the item you found
    • Where you found it (at least city and country)
    • Date of the find
    • Any other descriptor as you see fit
  • A find is only valid if it adheres to the following rules:
    • Finds can only be photos that are dated 15/02/2011 or later.
    • No previous photos are allowed.
    • No stock photos are allowed.
    • No photos or images borrowed from airline websites are allowed.
    • No manufactured/synthesised photos.
    • No conjuring the photo on your computer and then taking a photo of the computer screen.
    • A photo belongs to exactly one find (you can't use a photo for more than one find).
    • Unless otherwise directed in the description of the find:
      • If a find calls for a boarding pass, it must be for a flight taken from 15/02/2011 or later.
      • If a find calls for [a photo of] an aircraft, it must be a real aircraft, not a model.
      • If a find calls for a flight, you can take a photo of a FID, a gate information display, a check-in display or a boarding pass (subject to the rule a couple of points before). No printouts or screenshots of itineraries, e-tickets, MMB screens or booking screens. This list is not exhaustive but any others will be taken on a case by case basis.
    • Essentially, it has to be a photo you have taken in your travels or daily life. The more convincing the photo, the better chance it will pass for a find.
  • The only synthesis/modification allowed with photos is scrubbing out personal details or where it is required by law.
  • The first claim of a find (by post or PM timestamp) reported and approved by me will be credited. Subsequent claims will not be credited.
  • Important: I will be the ultimate judge of whether a find is successful or not. Your participation in this game accepts this condition! If you're unsure or confused, read this rule again.

How many items can one member find? (new rules compared to last game)
  • In week one of the competition, a single member may find up to 3 items. A week is a seven day period from Tuesday to Monday, with the first week of the game commencing on 15/02/2011.
  • Every two weeks that the game continues, the maximum number of finds for each member is increased by two. So in week three, the maximum will be increased to 5; in week five, the maximum is increased to 7, and so on.
  • This thread will be updated to show the maximum number of finds allowed per member for the week.
  • If a week of the game progresses without a single find, a random item will be purged from the list.

The Scoring System

Scoring system (new rules compared to The AFF Scavenger Hunt II)
  • The score starts at 50 points.
  • Points awarded for finds are:
    • For a member's first find in the game, they are awarded 5 points.
    • For a member who already has a find, they are awarded 2 points.
  • Penalties:
    • Attrition penalty: For every week that the game continues, 6 points are deducted.
    • Purging penalty: If an item is purged from the list due to nothing being found during a week, 15 points are deducted.

The ideas behind the scoring are:
  • Encourage as many members as possible to participate (since members who post their first find add 5 points to the score rather than 2).
  • Keep the game going as fast as possible (minimise attrition).
  • Keep the game constant (so a list with seemingly no items that can be found doesn't stay like that).

So now - that's all the rules. If you didn't get them all, you will soon! On with the game!

The List, The Score, The Fame

 Week #14 (week ends 23/05/2011)
  • 44 items have been found. 3 items have been purged. There are 3 items left to be found.
  • The current score is 84 points, a net change from the previous week of -4 points.
  • Members are now capped at 15 finds. This will be increased next week to 17.
  • There are 23 members of AFF involved in this Scavenger Hunt. There were no new finders last week.

:( The Purgatory

When a week goes by with no items found, a random item is purged from the list and placed in the purgatory.
  • 1. Boarding pass for a Star Alliance operated flight with flight number 1.
  • 3. Aircraft of an airline which is based in one of the former USSR republics except Russia.
  • 24. Airport sign which is written in Cyrillic.

Re: The List, The Score, The Fame

:arrow:Week #1 (week ends 21/02/2011)
  • There are 50 items left to be found.
  • The current score is 50 points.
  • Members are currently capped at 3 finds. This will not be increased next week.

The List
  1. Flight number which is four digits long, not a codeshare flight number, none of the digits are zeroes and the sum of the digits is less than or equal to 10.

  1. What kind of photo do you want? A boarding sign at the gate? (I have a 4 digit flight number coming up on an airline that is not a codeshare, but only have the itinerary/eticket for it...)

*edit* mis-read this, mine add up to significantly more than 10; you're a hard task master ;)
[*]FID showing a flight which is departing at a time where the minutes is not a multiple of 5.
Ditto for this (have one leaving at a bizzare time).

A shot of an FID, gate sign, check-in screen etc. is fine.

I'll leave itineraries/e-tickets off the valid list, only because they are easily 'forged' :)

Rules have been updated.

you're a hard task master ;)

Thank you :)

Re: The List, The Score, The Fame

Shots of (a) a boarding pass, and (b) the seat itself for a middle seat (i.e. a seat which is not directly next to an aisle or window).

Now that is just cruel - does anyone here sit in a middle seat ever?

[*]Two photos required: Objects (common nouns: no verbs, adjectives or proper nouns) which, when written, are anagrams of each other. Minimum length of the word must be 4 letters.

I'll pay that one.

I have to admit I thought that was going to be the left-field curve ball that'd throw a few off, but you did well to find something. The find does call for two photos, but I'll pay this one.

Well done drewbles.

I can take two photos if you'd rather? :) I just took it then on my laptop...

That's another find for you drewbles. I assume you had this in your cellar somewhere?

You've got one more find before you hit the maximum for this fortnight.

:(:( Yes - I did AKL-LAX in the middle of a 2-4-2 on NZ2 just 2 days ago - definitely NOT doing it again! Flight was already chockers when I booked and reserved seats (apparently the NZ cycling team were headed to LHR - whilst the young men were aesthetically pleasing I was not seated next to them sadly!), no *A status and my standby upgrade failed to come through.
I booked the row of 4 which was empty at the time, just my colleague and I - then ended up next to a bogan for the entire flight who may have been trying to remove my kidney with his elbows while I slept. Sadly I have no leg room pics nor the skills to photoshop my boarding pass  Nor do I have photographic evidence of when I finally decided to fight for my own personal space... I have pointy elbows;)

You mean by next Monday? :)

Yes had it at home. Many bottles of champagne too but none of that vintage. I refuse to drink the beer mentioned so none of that at home.

/dumb question on/

How do I turn a 4MB photo from the camera into a format I can upload (ie. size).

Currently a 4MB jpeg.

Yes, photo taken this afternoon;)

So with this one:

"Boarding pass for a flight between either DXB, AUH or DOH and somewhere else in another continent which is not Europe or Australasia."

does that only allow North and South America and Africa? Is all of Asia included in Australasia or is that just Australia and NZ?
