I'd booked the family on LAN801 (AKL-SYD) to come home from Easter in NZ, having found some pretty competitively priced tickets in whY. So we arrive at AKL at the very pre-dawn check-in time and after a short wait, the helpful chap in the OW business check-in line looks at my passport and then goes over to another desk to consult a piece of paper. Hmm I think, I wonder if this is good or bad news coming... I'd checked the inbound flight from SCL and it was only slightly delayed, so hopefully there weren't any issues with that.
Anyway, he comes back over and announces that due to the flight being oversold, we (self, mrs, nearly 3yr old) had been moved over to flight NZ101 which was due to depart an hour later (0700) than the booked LA flight (0600). But the sweetner was that we'd all been given J tickets. Thank you very much says I and we decamp over to the NZ premium check-in area!
I can report that the NZ 767-300 black leather seats in J were most comfortable, even if they weren't full recliners and that our 2-year old received plenty of dirty/annoyed/jealous looks by other boarding pax as he sat up the front waiting for departure. As it was, as soon as the seatbelt sign dinged off, we laid him back, popped the footrest, gave him his blanket to snuggle up in and he slept most of the flight - another thanks to LAN for that one: a couple of hours of peace!
Some other interesting notes:
- The list of names that the agent consulted appeared to have about 30 names on it: that seemed like a pretty ridiculous situation to get to, to be oversold by that many! I wonder what else it could have been?
- The LAN A340 was still at the gate next to us when we boarded NZ101 and pushed back about an hour late from its scheduled time
- Instead of some paltry partner-Y level SCs appearing in our three separate QFF accounts, a healthy swag of J-level SCs were added to my VFF account thanks to family pooling. VFF WP requaled with still six months to run... Thanks again LAN.
