Interesting, Tiger have a pretty solid backing now.

Thai, Tiger to tie-up
BANGKOK - THAI Airways International Pcl , the nation's flag carrier, said on Sunday it plans to form a new-low fare airline with Singapore budget carrier Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd.
The two airlines will hold a joint new conference in Bangkok on Monday to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the new airline, said a Thai Airways official, who declined to provide further details.

Tiger have always had solid backing from inception, just not a solid timetable.

I guess Thai Airways wanted to get in on all the money that’s being made from cheap tickets. Isn’t it already getting a little crowded in Asia though? :p

Talk of anywhere within 5 hrs of BKK, including China.

Just think of the possibilities ... Hobart to Beijing all the way on Tiger .... HBA-MEL-PER-SIN-BKK-PEK  ... .... :( .....

What's wrong with that? You can get to UK all the way from Australia on AirAsia!

Anyway, I always thought Nok Air was subsidiary of Thai Airways?!

So long as you leave 24 hrs between each segment (no we don't do connections or interlining).

I'm sure it will make QF and DJ happier as it means less likelihood of new aircraft just being pushed down to Australia.

Thai owns 39% of Nok Air which is what makes this even weirder.

So Thai is supporting a 39% owned airline (NOK) battling another 51% owned airline (Tiger Thai) and all the time taking market share away from themselves.

39% owned by TG, but only operating domestically whereas with Tiger plan is for regional flights. And not working for them, according to this report. 51% is better than 39%.

"However, Nok Air's growth does not fit anymore with our strategy. We made clear that we want to go regionally on the low-cost market. We have not been able to increase our ownership into Nok Air capital [currently at 39 percent]. And as Nok Air's growth is too slow, we looked for another alternative," explained Mr. Amranand.

Thai Airways and Nok Air relations have never been easy since the low-cost airline's inception. And the fact that Thai Airways decided to seize a new initiative in the low-cost market shows how high the unsatisfaction is with Nok Air. Although Nok Air will continue to serve domestic destinations not flown by Thai Airways, it looks like Thai is turning its back on its subsidiary to concentrate on its newest venture.

One would suspect Tiger will take the international routes (and coughet/Chiang Mai), and Nok the domestic ones. As far as I can tell, Thai have been "jetstar-ising" some domestic routes with Nok air, so probably taking away the least profitable routes from TG operations. Time will tell.

Have to say though, based on my one and only experience with Nok Air in 2007, it was pretty good service for a low cost airline. Not sure if their standards has slipped then.

Had 2 flights with them last week, and well we were in the air for 35 mins so hard to say. But all worked fine, a free Auntie Annies pretzel snack and a juice. Luggage was there within minutes at both ends. Will be flying them again (it's either that or drive 4+ hours )
