Delta Flight Under Review After Taxiway Landing (Update1) - Bloomberg.com
"
Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Federal safety investigators are looking into a Delta Air Lines Inc. flight that landed on an active taxiway instead of the runway at Atlanta’s airport.
Delta Air Lines Flight 60 from Rio de Janeiro set down on Oct. 19 on the strip parallel to the runway for which it had been cleared at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said today in a statement. "

The flight landed in Atlanta, its scheduled destination, after declaring a medical emergency for a check airman who had become ill. A check airman examines flight crews to ensure they are following procedures.
Hmm, I think a flight crew just failed their check

This is actually hard to understand as taxiways and runways have very different and distinct lighting systems.

DL/NW are having a bad time of it recently-another apparent pilot blunder-
Airline Crew Overshoots Minn. Airport By 150 Miles : NPR
"
Flight 188, an Airbus A320, was flying from San Diego to Minneapolis with 144 passengers and five crew. The pilots dropped out of radio contact with controllers just before 7 p.m. CDT, when they were at 37,000 feet.
The jet flew over the airport just before 8 p.m. and overshot it before communications were re-established at 8:14 p.m., the NTSB said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew told authorities they became distracted during a heated discussion over airline policy and lost track of their location.
The FAA notified the military, which put Air National Guard fighter jets on alert at two locations. As many as four planes could have been scrambled, but none ever took to the air."

Only hilarious because the end result was not catastrophic. The outcome could have been far from hilarious

You are right, hilarious may not have been quite the correct choice of word. "Ridiculous" or "ludicrous" would have been more appropriate.

This from the NTSB
The flight was cleared to land on runway 27R but instead landed on taxiway M, which is situated immediately to the north and parallel to runway 27R. The runway lights for 27R were illuminated; the localizer and approach lights for 27R were not turned on. Taxiway M was active but was clear of aircraft and ground vehicles at the time the aircraft landed. The wind was calm with 10 miles visibility. Night/dark conditions prevailed; twilight conditions began at about 7:20 a.m. EDT and the official sunrise was at 7:46 a.m. EDT.

Interesting that approach lights were off even though it was not yet daylight. Still...the pilots were landing at their home airfield

An important question for people on this website is, did the passengers get the points for the extra miles flown?

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew told authorities they became distracted during a heated discussion over airline policy and lost track of their location.

Perhaps the argument was over the bit of the policy that requires pilots to pay attention at all times.
