Re: The totally off-topic thread

It is almost guaranteed that if you get in a taxi with a 'No Uber' sticker in the back window, you are going to get very bad service....

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Adelaide media are reporting that Uber services from Adelaide Airport have been suspended until next week. More action by cab drivers may occur.

Last time we were in ADL we grabbed an uber black as it was only a dollar for two more than a taxi with an infinitely nicer vehicle

Why don't they just fraternise with the enemy? In Singapore you can simply use the uber app to book a taxi ... uber taxi (as opposed to uberX or uberBlack). At taxi rates.

Oh hang on, many taxi drivers wouldn't be able to maintain the minimum rating .... ;-)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

My mother lives in a small town in Gippsland that until recently had a very good taxi service. It has now been amalgamated to become a regional service and customer service has gone out the window. The local cabbies are stuck with a big-city model where everything goes through a central booking portal not even in the area. I don't know how many times she has had booked cabs not turn up to take her to appointments etc and is not able to get onto them to find out where the car is.

In the small towns i've worked at for any extended period, the way around this (as usually "everyone knows everyone") is to call the driver on their personal mobile and the driver "miraculously" gets a "hailed fare on the street". Avoids the booking office.

Only works in a small enough town where there are personal connections - the taxi drivers were usually well known at the hospitals as they were regularly bringing patients to and from and come in to assist with transfer to car (ie. carry bags etc). As well as collecting the FIFO docs from the station / airport and delivering to the hospital!

Suspended by ADL, State gov or Uber?

Uber I reckon. State Gov are pretty useless in such matters. Uber suspended the first night due to demos and safety so suspect they've done the same thing now.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Would it be reasonable for the state government to offer some form of compensation to the taxi industry? I’m not usually a fan of this but in this situation Taxis still have their “plates” and the state govt has more or less made them worthless overnight.

I think this has to be considered whist also considering that Taxis haven’t done much to improve their image. In my experience the frequency of cab drivers on the phone is frustrating.

They invested in 'the plate' and basically treated as a 'set and forget investment'.

Taxi drivers have been their own worst enemies refusing to modernise their industry or treat customers with respect. Many of us here have been ripped off by taxi drivers over the years.

As for compensating people who made poor investments, well where would we stop? Lots of industries fail for various reasons.

If the taxi industry had maintained their previous profit levels would they have paid extra taxes? Of course not. But they expect people to pay them when they fail. Too bad, so sad.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Don't forget the $1 SA levy on all taxi and uber fares to compensate the taxi industry for the introduction of Uber. Not wanting to start a taxi vs Uber sh*tfight, I support the taxi industry, I have to use them for my employment but I fail to see why I have to pay a levy to compensate a buisness I support.

Where would we stop? Perhaps at the boundaries of a marginal electorate.;) If wanting to make a poor investment, best to make it in such an electorate.

They already have by the consumer being charged a levy. But we are so desperate for money in SA that the exorbitant government licensing fees haven't changed.

Don't you just love it when you spend hours looking at something but someone has the answer the seconds? It's all about knowing who to ask.

Taxi drivers in SA pay $6000 annually for Insurance I heard today. In Vic it is $1200. Our Government is unscrupulous in their tax gouging.
