How much would a taxi cost to get from MEL airport to the F1 Grand Prix in Albert Park?

What route should i tell the driver to take?

thanks

Chucksta

About $45-$55 depending on traffic. Will also depend on what side of the park you are trying to get to and what time of day. Route will be the toll road. Not a lot of choice on route.

On that note....what's the best way to get from Docklands to the F1 on Sunday morning?

I've walked from CBD to Docklands, and CBD to Albert Park before...but on different trips so I can't quite work out if Docklands-Albert Park is walking distance. :p

Any trams that go out that way? There'll be a big group of us.

Cheers,
- Febs.

It really depends on traffic, but should be around $50.

There's really only one logical route along the "City Link Tollway" through to "Kings Way" which the driver will take anyway. That's if you want to go straight to the track. Though won't you want to go to a hotel or something first? :)

If you are staying at Docklands, you're best bet is to either catch a tram up or walk up to Swanson street (5-10 minute walk). Running south down Swanson street there will be (literally) heaps of trams that will go down to the track. Just ask the driver which gates he/she goes past, they all should know and it'll probably say on the front of the tram during GP week.

To walk the whole way isn't too bad but it's a lot easier to tram there, especially if theres a group of you.

Docklands-Albert Park is a good hike :p Walk or take a tram to Swanson St or Spencer St . There will be a lot dedicated trams to the F1. Any St Kilda tram, but you need to know which side on Albert Park your gate is. A big group will not matter at there are several thousand others doing what you are doing.

And bring you own ear plugs.

Later in the week expect Metlink to have the F1 GP service alterations up, like they have for this weekends Moomba Waterfest

Depends on the gate you have on your ticket, but generally Gate 1 is the best for taxis to drop you off. I'd budget at least $50-60 to get there from the airport.

Best way is to walk to Spencer Street and catch the free light rail (tram). That takes you to the gate 1 side on canterbury road. It may be easier to catch that tram and walk around, rather than walk to St. Kilda Road and catch that tram.

You should have gotten a map of Albert park with your ticket that will display the gates etc and the best public transport route. I have to work there every year and public transport is probably the best way to get there easily.

I'd be inclined to walk over to Spencer St and hop on a 96 (comes along Bourke, left into Spencer and down West side of GP track, or 112 (comes along Collins, left into Spencer and to North end of GP track). Depends exactly where you wish to enter the track. I think you'll be spoiled for choice. OTOH, if you wish to catch a tram down Swanston/St Kilda Rd then catch 48 (from New Quay) or 70 (from cnr Harbour Esplanade/Bourke St) - they will go along Flinders to Swanston. The free "City Circle" caught in the same direction will do the same.

Thanks all, much appreciated!

Mwenenzi - Good advice re: earplugs too, cheers!

Earplugs and sun-screen ! (Sunburn is also not good !)

Have a good time, i probably wont get to see it live the year (for the first time in many years) unless i change my travel plans.

On Saturday and Sunday, there are no 96 or 112 trams operating to St Kilda and are terminating in Spencer Street

From corner of Spencer and Collins, there are lots of free special service trams for GP ticket holders just going to and from the Grand Prix; just get on one of the GP trams to get to gates 1-4. If wanting gates 5,8,9 or 10 , then hop on one of the special trams at the corner of Flinders and St Kilda Road

Use a private driver - private message me and I will give you my drivers number, that way you are not waiting in line, you will be in a nice car and the price will be fixed before leaving the airport. It may cost a little more, but worth the extra...

Me, I'd avoid the taxi queues and take the SkyBus ($16 o/w, $26 return) to it's terminus (in the Spencer St bus station); walk outside and catch one of the FREE trams to the track!

You'll be on that tram ½ an hour after disembarking!

I'm here to say the SkyBus is a very efficient service and unless there are four or more of you travelling together is the way to go!

Got me sold!

Can I buy the SkyBus ticket at MEL airport when I arrive? I don't want to prepay on the website.

How do you know which trams are free for the Grand Prix? Do you catch them on Spencer St?

thanks

Chucksta

You can pay cash to the driver or buy at one of the airport booths with a CC/Cash/Eftpos (depending on time of day).

I have not used a Free GP tram, you might like to research the links provided by Dave Noble and Mwenenziin previous posts.

I've had a look and it appears you'll need to stroll 80 metres down to the tram stop in Spencer St outside Southern Cross R/S on the corner of Collins St's.

They should all be free if you have a GP ticket...

Take a cheap rain proof poncho that wraps up small , as well as ear plubs and sunscreen and some sort of hat.

I recall that when I entered the grounds there were sellers of such items inside the grounds.

I don't think its forecast to rain is it?

Ear plugs eh? Is it really that loud??... Now where did I put that biz class amenity kit.

Yes, it really is that loud - painfully loud without ear plugs.
