I just did a dummy booking from CNS-LHR in J, taxes were $400 approx. I was expecting $100-$200.. I'm just keying in from the web site for redemption's am I doing something wrong ? newbie to AA

Are you on a BA flight for any leg, that is the only thing that I can think of that would generate that much tax. There is also the UK departure tax if you leave from the UK (for an AA redemption it may be better to get a cheap OW flight to DUB/PAR/AMS/FRA and leave from there, the points will be the same from anywhere in the EU to AUS).

thanks, I rang the US and fortunately got 2 J flights with CX CNS-HKG-LHR for $102 taxes... pretty happy with that. Yes BA seemed to be the issue with high taxes.
The flights were for friends, wish it was for me ;)
