Hi all,

I'm starting to think about a trip to the UK in 2012 and trying to figure out the best approach. At the moment I'm tossing up between

a) Just buying 2x PE returns - it seems like JL and BA both have $3200 fares which is good.
b) Using some points to redeem 1x QF PE fare (I will have just enough points for 1x by the end of the year when I plan to book) and paying for another - although this is much less appealing at the moment while Qantas PE prices are 5k+
c) Trying to snag some cheap JQ *C flights to SIN or NRT and flying from their either in economy or PE using points or $$.

I know none of us can predict where fares will be in 12 months time but interested to hear some thoughts - especially as I don't know how much taxes and fees would be from SYD and say SIN - is it materially different? I'd rather not redeem Y seats from points if I then have to pay another $1000 in taxes pp. In that instance it'd just be better to pay cash and keep the points for a better use.

Is there any way to find out the tax/fees component? Is it standard or does it change regularly etc?

Thanks

You can find out the taxes/fees BA charge using their booking engine. Just do a booking from SIN and also from SYD and see the difference.

The rates will be the same whatever date you choose. For that route, I understand they have recently gone up due to a change in the British rates. Changes don't happen too often... but a couple of times a year isn't impossible (particularly as they include airline fuel charges).
