Hi

Booked on a flight from Brisbane to Shanghai via Sydney. To avoid a very early flight I would like to catch a flight from Brisbane to sydney the evening before and join the flight from Sydney the next day. Qantas says OK but there will be a fee if I want to leave the airport. Would like a comfortable night in a hotel so of course I would like to leave the airport.

Can anyone tell me what the tax fee is? It feels like trying to get blood out of a stone trying to get this information.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

Did they advise how much it would be?

Having gone through the various aviation taxes in Australia, I am a little puzzled as well. I can't think of any that would be charged in Sydney as a domestic - international transfer overnight vs a transfer same day.

Is the original flight planned for BNE-SYD numbered QF399 or below?

Others here know the taxes better than me though, so perhaps I have missed something.

-- edit: There is one scenario that I can find which would have a small ~$2 difference in taxes, which I discuss later in this thread.

I'm guessing they mean it will be beyond a certain connection period and will be counted as a stop over, or possibly booked as separate flights. Depending on the fare rules I'll also guess that stop overs might not be permitted on that, having done ADL-SYD-PEK when it was still in service.

Maybe just reservations trying to explain nicely but making a mess out of it.

If your flights on Dec 27th, give me a yell and I'll guest you into a lounge (assuming you don't have access)I'm doing MEL/SYD/Shanghai that day

Mr!

There is no fee for leaving the airport. Enjoy your night in a hotel

Indeed, but having gone through various scenarios, there does appear to be a difference in taxes for the following <extremely rare> scenario:

Passenger flies BNE-SYD on < QF399. Overnights. Flies Ex-SYD on < QF399 vs
Passenger flies BNE-SYD on < QF399. Flies same day Ex-SYD on < QF399

If the passenger flies from Brisbane (from International airport) and connects same day to an international flight, then they appear to pay the PASSENGER SERVICES CHARGE INTERNATIONAL - WY Charge only in Brisbane ($22.12), and then the PASSENGER SERVICES CHARGE – DOMESTIC - QR charge for Brisbane and Sydney ($3.17+$4.53)

If they overnight, then they appear to pay the PASSENGER SERVICES CHARGE – DOMESTIC - QR charge for Brisbane and Sydney ($3.17+$4.53) and then the PASSENGER SERVICES CHARGE INTERNATIONAL - WY ex SYD the next day ($24.15)

So there is a $2.03 difference - other capitals have much higher differences.

BTW, that's all from my limited understanding of taxes etc - I hate dealing with the sums for them... way too complicated, and more than happy for someone to find the definitive answer or correct me!

Wow! You guys are terrific. I imagined getting an answer in a week or so. Thank you. I am dealing with a chinese travel agent in Beijing so hence all the confusion as they may not have the English to explain the problem fully. Qantas China was no help either but have left a message on website.

Just wanted to know what the sum was as didn't want to get the earlier flight if it was the same cost as a standard flight in taxes. If I receive a reply from Qantas I will pass it one.

Many thanks again.

Thanks to munitalP for the offer of use of lounge. Very kind. Will be flying the opposite way (Shanghai - Brisbane) on the 27th and landing in Sydney on the 28th. Sorry to miss you. Enjoy your flight.

Ya, taxes can be different, but I have come across QF staff trying to claim that the person cannot leave the airport before which sounded to me possibly what the person had been told in this case

Well the C.O.C do state

Book - Flights - Conditions of Carriage - Full
10.1 Refusal of Carriage
Even if You have a Ticket and a confirmed reservation, We may refuse to carry You and Your Baggage if any of the following circumstances have occurred or We reasonably believe will occur:
<snip>
* if You ask the relevant government authorities for permission to enter a country in which You have landed as a transit passenger

So in some cases the staffers would just be sticking to the rules in their advice. I choose to ignore it of course - at my own peril!

"The current published fees mean that international airlines pay $26.57 for each arriving and departing international passenger. There is no charge for infants, transit and international-to-international transfer passengers.
Qantas pays $3.90 per domestic passenger ($3.70 for the runway charge and $0.20 for shared security)."

So the most that you could be charged based on fees by SACL and or QF is $26.57 for being a departing international pax versus one in transit + $3.90 for the domestic arrival.

Brisbane and Sydney are both in the same country though and the situation referred to was for doing a domestic to international transfer

On an Australian passport, I landed at Syd from Melbourne on a Mel-Syd-LA flight. Customs or whoever wouldn't let me out of SYD transit. I was trapped there against my Will for 5 hours. I'll never go thru Sydney again. At least Auckland Airport let you into the open air.

You must have arrived on one of the v few international MEL-SYD services and not had the MEL-SYD have a Red D sticker attached I suspect

As far as the OP relates, there is no ( as far as I am aware ) evening flight from BNE-SYD which would arrive at the international terminal

There is nothing to stop a domestic arriving passenger arriving on a domestic flight from leaving the terminal

Dave

Right you are!

Qantas just replied with:

There'll be no tax difference if you stay in Sydney less than 24 hours.

So, I guess reservations was just playing safe. Good news. Thanks to all.
