The cash infusion by TaTa/SIA was not long after TaTa took over Air India.
I do wonder if AI and Vistara are looking at a merger at some point down the track.

Is it even possible for AI to have a low cast carrier subsidiary?

In a Vistara/AI merger, AI would be the LCC, but yes Air India Express is the LCC version of Air India. IIRC, Air India still provide things like catering etc and allow free checked luggage so as much as we like to deride them, they are less LCC (on paper) in domestic/short haul flights, than most US or European carriers.
