Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

Don't despair. The brekkie on QF8 (DFW-BNE) the other day was pretty good - FWIW, it was a paid fare WMM.....(with my money)

Proof!

Yes, that is salmon!

I had this - Pastrami and Gruyere croissant......bloody beautiful!

One thought crossed my mind was that it could be the costs of food in Japan must be so prohibitive for QF to prepare a decent breakfast ex NRT.

But, looking at my photos taken on that trip I found one that refutes that silly thought

P1010652_resize.jpg

That meal cost me ¥980 which was approx $10.

But it is true that the breakfast coming into NRT was "normal": muesli, fruits, toast, jam, orange juice etc...

Considering that we practically don't have dinner (not just two of us, but nearly the whole J cabin) on both legs (QF21/22), QF essentially saves quite a bundle from catering at that standard.

Some bean counters somewhere on Coward St, Mascot are smiling, I'm sure.

And this is how it should be on flights from Asia.

The last time I flew QF from HKG it was before this cafe breakfast crime (over a year ago now). I was served a full breakfast one hour before arrival - and it was a Chinese option with Congee, Dumplings etc. It was served all on one tray, which was fine to maximise sleep time and did not detract from the quality. The option of a full breakfast to me was extremely beneficial as I did not have a chance after arrival to eat until Lunch time.

Some passengers chose to sleep. But others did partake in a full breakfast having eaten dinner. When I woke up some passengers had already finished breakfast and I was not disturbed from my sleep at all by any sounds.

The argument that QF is listening to customers wanting a lighter breakfast is complete rubbish. The argument that this maximises sleep time is also rubbish. Sure Qantas might save $10 per customer on cutting back breakfast, but how many tens of thousands have they lost?? Just increase the airfare by $10 in J....no one will notice, and no one will get p***** off.

Could you enlighten us with some figures from the 'research' that is behind this slimmed down, weight-buster type of breakfast on ex Asia flights (J cabin)?

Or is that commercial in confidence ?

If that is a J breakfast, what's it like in Y ? Does anyone know?

Probably better!! I nearly asked for a Y breakfast last time I flew out of HKG, but with the re-timed flight leaving HKG much earlier than it used to, I decided to skip breakfast altogether and asked the FAs to leave me asleep.

Flew BKK-SYD Nov 2013, breakfast consisted of a muffin, juice and small tub of yogurt. Passed on the coffee - if I was Grinders, I'd be horrified at the product being served - gasoline would probably taste better!!

Muffin was the same blah it's been for the past 5 years - tasteless and more often than not dry. Ended up leaving the meagre offering and had breakfast in the QP.

As the flight was delayed hours due to fog in SYD and first flight available for me was 2pm - landed in SYD at 8:30am after refuelling in ADL (which was my ultimate destination anyway!!)Thank you SYD QP for serving real cappuccinos - think I would have died if I'd been forced to drink the ADL (BKK the same) machine slop.

+1

One can just imagine the questions that were asked:

"Would you like to have a longer, relaxing sleeping time but still enjoy a simpler but high quality breakfast served much in the style of a cafe? (Y/N)"

You also get the impression they probably asked random passengers who were occasional flyers rather than FF'ers so survey results were based on different perspectives and different levels of exposure to other airline offerings.

I did SIN-SYD overnight late last year. Breakfast was a muffin and a small tub of yoghurt.

Coming from a SQ flight (FRA-SIN), onto a QF flight (SIN-SYD); QF has lost the game, big time. And this was in Y. Yes, I realise that flight distance and all is different, but if I compare it to my departing flight (SYD-DXB), QF has really fallen down the ladder.

QF 23 BKK-SYD J class last week. Actually it was ok and I ate it 55 minutes from landing as I was sleeping when they commenced the meal service. It was a small quiche, muffin, fruit and yoghurt served with the energy smoothy drink.

More than what my ex-NRT offering !

The question then is why ?

55 mins before landing?? OMG, the crew must have been in melt-down to get that served in time! Was counselling available to the crew on arrival?

side note.. did you fold up the tray cover or don't they use one for breakfast?

The table cloth? I didnt get given one just got given that tray, the napkin and cutlery. I woke up sort of late after many people had already eaten and I was offered that. He said to me do I like fruit and yoghurt? I said yes. Then I got given that! I think he told the other flight attendant 'one of everything'.

interesting - i wonder if other pax got a table cloth? or has that also been enhanced?

If you only get onigiri and oj in J what do you get in PE???
I'm flying to/from NRT next month so interested to know.

Hope it's a cooked brekkie to NRT as we will be straight onto a series of trains.
On the way home it won't be such an issue as we'll head to the J lounge before our CBR flight.

Much better, and served at a decent time prior to arrival.

I'd happily forgo the tablecloth for the better food and better-timed breakfast.

Any ideas what the breakie is like in PE on HKG-SYD? I've got this trip coming up next month.

See my post 104 on the difference between what we were served in y+ compared to J. We were shocked that Y+was so much better than J.

I had thought that by now Qantas would have improved the J breakfast or at least give passengers a choice of continental or something more substantial if that is what they want.

Will be interesting to see if any improvements to this are made in the near future.

Very underwhelming J breakfast experience from HKG to SYD recently. Not just the limited choice (e.g. fruit or a cinnamon scroll) but the quality of food provided left a lot to be desired, especially for a Business cabin. Breakfast seemed a bit rushed even though we were a couple of hours out of Sydney. There was no table cloth (just the little tray) which isn't a big deal, but small touches like this just detract from what should be a premium product.

Whilst this thread is mainly about the Café style breakfast, I'd also note that there were no pre-dinner drinks offered and the dinner service was quite delayed and then felt rushed. I've been a fairly loyal Qantas customer, but this isn't the only time recently that I've been disappointed with the timing, offerings and quality of service in International J in recent trips.
