Taking an extra bag on a Qantas flight to NZ with a NZ domestic connection

Hi everyone

I travel regularly to NZ, usually with a domestic connection on the NZ side. I prefer to book Qantas as I find their service to be far better than Air NZ. However, I've recently encountered a problem. When you book a trip through Qantas that has an AirNZ connection you can't add an extra bag in advance. You have to add it at the airport. I was forced to do this on Sunday coming back from NZ with a charge of $120 for an 11kg golf bag. I can't even convince Qantas and AirNZ to separately let me add the extra bag (this would cost $80).

Does anyone have a solution for this, or is this simply a clever way of preventing people from booking through Qantas? If that's the case then it's working as I will be forced to book AirNZ in the future.

Thanks.

You might just have to book the Air NZ flight separately in the future.

Though isn't this a situation where the most significant carrier would come into play... so because you got bags on Qantas you'll get them on ANZ?

Thanks for that. I have had it confirmed by Qantas that:

a) The charge will be $120 each way for the extra bag. Doesn't matter what size or weight.
b) This will have to be booked at the airport and paid for at the service desk in the domestic terminal.

Needless to say this will be the last time I book Qantas when there is a domestic connection required in NZ.
