I need to both drop and pick up a passenger at T2 tomorrow. By far the most efficient way to do this is as one transaction at the Departure drop-off zone.

BUT

Will this attract the attention of the aforesaid PNs and is it in breach of their self-serving regulations? Most importantly will I get away with it?

I know it is better to be safe than sorry but the incoming pax will have been waiting for some time and the alternative is problematic. In fact I am unsure what is the quickest legal way to go from T2 Departures to the T2 pick-up parking area. I think it involves a 2 km loop with a stop to pick up a dozen KK doughnuts, or am I being facetious?

I look forward to your wisdom and of course sarcasm too.

Ask your incoming passenger to wait at the designated waiting / pick up area at T2; your departing passenger can get off here, cross the street to T2, and then take the escalator up one level to the departure hall. No risk of any fine etc.

A very good suggestion, kpc, but the outgoing passenger is my Mum who is in her seventies and has a dodgy ankle. I suppose if I'm quick I might be able to get her to check-in and dash back to the car within 10 minutes .... it just seems such a pointless exercise when my colleague can chuck their bag in the back of the car and jump in whilst I am saying goodbye to Mum at the Departures drop-off.

Wouldn't any reasonable person see this as reducing congestion rather than adding to it? Yes, yes - the word "reasonable" appears exactly 0 (zero) times in any law or regulation in Oz let alone SydneyAirportInc, but even Daleks have a soft spot so why can't the parking naz_s?

I say go for it.

Just drop off and pick up at the same time, I have many times and I do think they are more worried about taxis doing it than people with little old ladies in tow.

Just do it... You are legitimately dropping someone off. You have to get back into your car after you do that. No different to someone else getting in with you.

I forgot about the new rules the other night and had a mate pick me up from Departures at around 10PM.

Well, I TRIED to have a mate pick me up...what actually happened was that I wandered upstairs, and found that the only two people there were me and the parking guy. I stared at him. He stared at me. I stared at him. He stared at the back of my head as I lost my nerve and walked all the way down the ramp to be picked up kerbside. I felt like a wimp, but didn't want the aggro having only just got back the feeling in my arms and legs after a JQ flight from Melbourne.

My advice - don't risk it...if you're successful, I'll feel like a fool.

LOL!!! He has no authority... Only people that can give you move on orders LEGALLY are the AFP.

Is that still the case? I vaguely remember that there was a legal loophole that was recently closed by the state government, giving these guys authority to issue fines (and therefore, I presume, also to move on cold tired wanderers like me.

MBR - I did wimp out, as I couldn't bring myself to dump my mother 200m from the terminal and also ask my colleague to brave the dismal weather that morning.

So I told the incoming pax to find her way to the drop-off area (not so easy apparently) and then avoid all eye contact with the PNs. When I stopped the car opposite her she casually sauntered over whilst I made a big fuss of getting my mum's bag out of the boot and giving her a hug goodbye. I then shut the boot (which magically had a different bag now inside) and slipped behind the wheel with my new friend. Sorted.

Of course there's no guarantee that some stool-pidgeon wasn't noting my mum's number-plate down, so I best not gloat too loudly about my cleverness.

Nice work! It's been a long time since I saw the old "switched my mother with a colleague in a way that didn't raise the suspicions of the parking guy" trick.

Of course, it's not nearly as impressive as the old "switched my wife with a girlfriend in a way that didn't raise the suspicions of the In-laws" trick...a trick that as far as I know has never been successfully performed at any venue, ever.

I've given up on the whole stressful mess...I catch the train.

Too true - but it doesn't stop us all from trying!
