I need to go to Hong Kong in late October, early November. I am currently Velocity platinum.

Thought process is to redeem some reward points through Velocity and book a one way business class ticket, using Sinagpore or Virgin Atlantic metal. For the other leg, I would book and pay for a one way premium economy seat with Virgin Atlantic.

Just after peoples thoughts on Virgin Atlantic versus Singapore Airlines. Which metal should I try and get on? I am happy to fly via Singapore but know that Virgin Atlantic offers a direct service.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I do a stack of travelling around south east asia on a quarterly basis which is always on SQ, I can give you some insight into Y but unfortunately no J.

I returned home direct on VS200 the other day HKG-SYD and it was a pretty average experience, I found the plane quite old and rundown, IFE was fairly average, food was ok but not as good on SQ, service was also taken out by SQ.

In summary I would prefer to fly SYD-SIN-HKG return any day of the week but just my preference.

The brief look of the seats on the J product between SQ and VS, I'd have taken SQ but obviously didn't get a chance to test it out, maybe one day :)

Hope that helps.
Adam.

Having flown SQ Business on the A380 and VS Upper I would say that SQ wins hands down. Bear in mind SQ don't have Prem Econ. so unless you paid for business on your return leg you would be in Y.

Thanks P Blackie and Nitro for the feedback.

Booking on points with SQ direct is just under 50,000 points one way Sydney to Hong Kong business, which I am lucky enough in AMEX, so will leave Velocity out of it completely.

For the way back will probably end up in VS premium economy, with the SC' I should earn enough to ensure my platinum status is renewed for another 12 months.

HKG to SYD is often readily available as a *alliance award through Avianca at 47500 points, given the cost is $15 USD per 1000 when a promo is on, it's not bad value, VS upper class has a reasonable rep although much like BA, Y and Y+ have seen better days.

Dont discount some other options, MH have been very competitive in J ex HKG, and there is always the TPE CX J specials, sometimes a return makes sense.

Was just going to suggest you reconsider using Velocity points with Singapore as it will make your nose bleed when you see the burn rate...

Agree with others that the product is superior however

One option for your return is booking y class SQ one way via Sin could get it for around $500+ on a w class, which is 100 vff scs.did that last year, with a break in SIN for a couple of nights.
