Hi, looking for advice on travelling from Sydney to Havana, Cuba next April. My partner is making this round trip alone and is undecided which airline to fly and route to take bearing in mind you cannot fly directly from the US to Cuba - at least at present. Flight would be in business class. Options are Air Canada via Vancouver- Toronto-Havana or Qantas-LA-Mexico City-Havana or American Airlines with the same routing as Qantas. Total travel times appear similar. Any thoughts on the merits of each airlines business class product? - Qantas would be on the A380 or 747 vs 777 for AA vs 777 on Air C. A big concern is the connection in Mexico City if that route was taken. A separate booking is needed so is 3 hours realistic as a transit time there to get bags, clear customs, get to Aero Mexico desks and get back through security?? If a stay is needed overnight is there an airside hotel in Mexico City airport and what is it like? Thanks for your help.

All of those at least allow you to avoid Cubana airlines :)
I would pick Qantas

What's wrong with Cubana? ;) We have flown them and are booked again flying HAV-SDQ. Cheap and cheerful airline to get into/out of Havana :D

Last time we flew SYD-SCL then to MEX then HAV. We stayed at the W Mexico City one time, and on the way out we stayed at the Hilton which is at the airport. There are other options via South/Central America too, especially if you want to avoid landing in the USA. Also instead of Mexico City, you could fly to Cancun, Mexico ... and then from there its not too far from Cuba. At least Cancun is touristy and lots of resorts to enjoy, spend a few days, before heading to Cuba.

Our trip next year sees us going to YYZ then to VRA (spend a few days at a resort before getting on a bus to HAV 90 minutes away).

Similarly, if you want to fly purely One World .... there are several AA flights that can take you close to Cuba so you don't have to travel too far on the final leg. So if you chose Qantas, tag on an AA flight to places , for example, Grand Cayman, Kingston, Santo Domingo, Nassau, Cancun, etc.

I did it as SYD - LAX on VA (reward seat) and then Delta (but operated by AeroMexico) from LAX - MEX. Overnighted at the Hilton in MEX terminal and then to HAV on Interjet. Was pleasantly surprised by that flight.

To leave I flew HAV - YYZ on Air Canada. Then connected to JFX as I was heading to NYC after.

I believe LA fly LIM-HAV and IB MAD-HAV if you want to avoid the US or visit other places on the way. It's probably longer and more expensive than via Canada or Mexico across the Pacific, but may be worth remembering if there are any good deals for the legs out of Australia
