Does anyone know why the Sydney Sofitel Wentworth has no availability 7th Jan - 4th March? I called them a few weeks ago and they said they were having issues with their inventory but it doesn't seem to have been resolved.

Looks like the issue is still there. Says booked out for the entire duration

It certainly needs the physical refurb. I hope they also spend some money on staff training too. I stayed there a few months ago and while no major issues, it just lacked the level of polish staff have at other Sofitels. Finally, the F&B in the exec lounge is quite poor when compared to the Sofitel Darling Harbour or Melbourne.

I've heard of the Sofitel Wentworth but didn't see the point. I mean if you had to choose just based on location Darling Harbour would be better, no? With that being said, IIRC the Sofitel Wentworth was always on promotion with Accor+ with it often being the affordable luxury option if staying in Sydney.

In any event, let's hope they revitalize this property to match the exacting standards of a Sofitel property.

It’s actually a Sydney landmark originally built by QANTAS (I just discovered that bit of trivia) but it was a Sheraton for years. More recently, a quarantine hotel…

Depends on where you need to be in Sydney. DH certainly has the views, but it's a little out of the way if you're in the CBD for work. Also, lacks proximity to a train line (although there is the light rail right next door). Finally the area around the DH Sofitel is a construction site at the moment. So fewer dining options.

Having said that, the DH is far superior and priced as such. Will be interested to see what happens with pricing at the Wentworth once the refurbishment is complete.

Heritage listed so I’d expect a thorough “soft” refurb.
Staff seem genuinely excited by the plans so hopefully it will retain the history and be tasteful - as it is the elder statesman of Australian 5 * hotels .
Location is actually quite good for the business and tourism sector.
Interesting to hear on our recent stay within the club lounge that the offering was better at SSW - from Accor members who do 30 plus nights across both properties.

All public areas are being renovated from 6/1/24 over a 6-8 week period with hotel closure over this time.
Rooms then being renovated floor by floor with club lounge relocated to level 3 until August - then it’s back to the original level 5 spot.
Reckon its worth avoiding after it reopens until construction is complete? or would it be ok to stay if they're going floor by floor?

Haven't stayed there during a renovation. I normally stay here due to location in the CBD, plus also the access to a full gym with power rack (Sofitel DH gym doesn't have a rack, just machines from what I can see)

I think you'd be ok with the construction unless you were hoping to sleep during the day.

Perennially, I really dislike the gym this hotels uses. The hours are really poor and it's incredibly dark. I hope as part of the renovations they get an on site gym.
