Hi,

I am flying overseas on Monday departing Cairns to Sydney to Rome. My layover in Sydney is 10 hours overnight. All my flights are booked on the one ticket through qantas. Am i able to get the free transfer bus from T2 to T1 when I land in Sydney, and then leave the international terminal and stay at the Rydges Airport hotel overnight, or do I have to stay in the international airport once I leave the bus? I'm unsure as to where the bus drops us off. I haven't travelled internationally through Sydney before, only Brisbane.

Thanks

According to the Sydney airport website, T1 is only open 0300 - 2300. So you'd have to leave the terminal at some point anyway.

According to the transfers info about Sydney airport on the QF website, it says:

Transferring from T2 and T3 (Domestic Airports) to T1 (International Airport):
The Transfer Lounge is located airside (after passing through the security check point), at Gate 15 in T3. A shuttle bus service is available to passengers that are travelling or have travelled on a Qantas flight (including codeshare flights) or oneworld flight. The shuttle buses operate every 10-20 minutes from 6am to 9.40pm AEST. On arrival at T1 proceed up the escalator, through immigration and security to your departure gate.

So you'll be airside in T3 but arrive landside at T1 so you'll be able to go to the hotel according to the way I read this.

The bus drops you off near a walkway that takes you to the check in area, however as its overnight I doubt you will be able to through check you bags, I suspect its likely you will need to collect bags in Sydney, in which case a train will suffice for your journey to the international.

Thanks. I was thinking that may be the case with bags and overnight.

If staying at the rydges - I would enquire about their own terminal transfer service. They might be able to pick you up.

Rydges have a clean, friendly and free airport shuttle every half hour - details on their website. Worked well for me.

Assuming your flight is a QF domestic (QF1-QF399 flight) you will need to collect your luggage from the carousel in T3 then proceed outside to the hotel pickup point for the Rydges SYD Airport free shuttle bus.

As already mentioned above if you have checked baggage you won't be able to use the QF shuttle bus from T3 to T1 as that is for carry on luggage only.

There is one flight that departs CNS Intl & arrives SYD Intl terminal - JQ16 which operates on Tuesday & Saturday mornings however if your layover is only 10 hours overnight I'd say you'd be on the QF927 which of course is a domestic flight.

If there's traffic or weather the shuttle can be delayed significantly as it was for me a few weeks back. In hindsight the train would have gotten me into bed much earlier.
