Which routes / airlines would you recommend? She does have some VA and QF points, but too soon to use I guess.

How many QF points does she have?

There's actually a bit of availability on award flights in February, e.g. SYD-xHKG-SGN on CX, 9/2/16, returning on 29/2 on 3K/QF via SIN. 88000 points per adult return (plus taxes) in economy.

Otherwise, Vietnam Airlines are pretty cheap and meant to be ok.

Thanks opus, just looked at both QF on points (bad connections, waste of points I reckon). VN has a sale and dates can be found for $1050 Y and the flight deperature and arrival times are quite civilised. Website's not the best.

But, a good start.

Any other suggestions for 2 sensible young women going to Vietnam, places to go people to see, that sorta thing?

VN visa can be obtained on arrival. Organising one before you depart is no drama, and my recommended option.
