I've just been asked by if you need to collect baggage and clear security at LAX when continuing on to JFK. Apparently the QF SSU don't know the answer as that's who she went to first.

This has probably come up before but a search in my iPhone yielded little.

You need to collect baggage and clear customs and immigration at LAX - even when travelling onto JFK on the same flight number. Baggage will already be tagged through to the final destination but the baggage re-check process is very efficient.

I always use same airline internationally, doing a BNE/LAX on Qantas then transfer to AA to SFO, I guessI need to college luggage off Q for the latter sector?.

For all travel to the USA, you must pass through immigration and collect bags at first port of entry. If your bag is ticketed through to the final destination, you just collect your bag after immigration, go through customs, then drop you bag off for re-loading. If you don't have your bag checked all the way through, you have to make your way to your next airlines check in.

The process for QF107 to New York if all goes to plan is:

  • Check bags through to JFK
  • Fly to LAX
  • Disembark Aircraft
  • Walk through the dungeon like corridors to TBIT immigration
  • Queue up
  • Be processed by Immigration
  • Collect bags
  • Proceed to/through customs processing
  • Head up ramp, look for signs for baggage "re-deposit"
  • Re-deposit bags
  • Look for transfer security
  • Head through back airside
  • Await ongoing flight ...

Is it the same process for QF108 JFK-LAX-SYD?

No, as you are leaving the country and do not need to go through immigration or customs with your bags with you, you will check them in at JFK and see them again in SYD.

As per above, I came of QF93 to connect with QF107. After clearing Customs, there was a bag deposit (basically a lady with a Qantas sign collecting our bags) who directed us to transfer security. As we were runnng late due to a tight connection, we had an escort from Qantas take us to the Transfer Security but along the way were Qantas staff with posts which said "QF107 connection, this way". All was very easy, obviously with connections coming from so many flights, they know people will need assistance with this process and they were very helpful.

After experiencing the joys of QF107 and the endless queues at LAX last month, I will never ever complain about Sydney airport ever again. One and a half hours to get through the immigration line and the Qantas person had actually left the baggage carousel area by the time we got there to collect our bags. Nothing difficult but just one endless queue after another

The best part about it is the US citizens have about twice as many people to serve them. And then where there are no US citizens left, only then will they address the actual queue (which is about 60% of people arriving). I love how the US is so 'welcoming'.............

Mind you Sydney Airport isn't much better.

Yes the imbalance between staffing of US nationals vs foreigners queue is what leaves a bitter taste with me. Yes you expects foreigner queues to be longer but not 10+ times longer WTF....

On the bright side unlike SYD and MEL, LAX has plenty of space in the immigration hall for the masses in the Queue. Here the Queue can go back to the duty free counters.

And with departures, it's a matter of we don't care if you are of questionable of immoral character, cause you are leaving lol.

Whats a foreigner? I thought they only had Patriots and Aliens?

What is super annoying is that they make you line up beind individual agents. What's long with a snake queue (or line, as they call it). Once or twice I've been stuck behind someone getting an super extra grilling and taken half an hour longer than someone who chose a different queue.

At DFW they employ the long tailed snake with several 'heads' philosophy.

There's a real art to queue selection ... not only do you need to look at queue size to decide which queue may be faster, you need to suss out how many agents are manning each queue (... also there's consideration of advice to be like the fictitious Ryan Binham's mother ...).

hi
is there a chance to use a lounge at LAX when transiting between LAX and JFK on QF107?
thanks

As a WP there is a nice F lounge you can use. The manager there is now considered a goddess because she gave me some Vegemite. While she's a Yank she appreciated an Aussie's need for the black gold. :)
