Just spotted a SYD-LON return on JAL in July for $1844 AUD in discount economy ('Economy Trans Smart Saver'). This seems to be about $350-$500 cheaper than Cathay, Qantas or BA for similar dates... Anyone seen anything cheaper floating around on OW for mid 2010?

I'm aware of the layover on SYD-LON leg and that JAL put you up for the night. Otherwise, other threads around the place seem to agree that JAL service is pretty good and nothing to be concerned about. I've never visited Japan so figured it seems like a decent deal... anything I need to consider?

Anyone know if this will earn points and SC's at regular economy rate on QFF? The fare conditions at au.jal.com/en/flight_planning/condition/ show JAL earn of 50% but I assume this is not the same for Qantas... $200 canx fee for this ticket also seems pretty good.

I should be QF silver by the time I take this flight, if that means anything. Any thoughts / pointers / encouragement welcome.

You might wish to consider that JAL is in some financial difficulties. I dopn't think they will go bust and I think that the Japanese government will back them. But the thing is that they are looking for a financial "rescue" as such. And they might even move to star alliance. So overall IMO there is a very, very, very, very, very small chance that you will lose the fare. There is also a slightly bigger chance you can't earn Oneworld points with JAL by that time.

Maybe I'm being alarmist on this, and I'm sure others will correct me if I am.

Thanks for the heads up. If JAL were to leave OW then the $200 cancellation fee might get exercised.

Note, that the chance is extremely small at this stage, but things are being discussed.....

If your ticket is issued while JAL is still a member of oneworld and it's in an eligible booking class, you will still earn the points/SCs with QFFF.
