Sorry if this is a bit of a Newb question..............

We're booked with EK to fly SYD-DBX-MAD in May.
But of course with all the disruption, we have a backup flight booked with QF (Classic Award)

It's looking like we'll be using the backup.

It's QF from SYD-SIN-LHR (lands T3) then LHR-MAD with IB (departs T5).

I booked it online with QF using points, end to end, but I notice on my online bookings, that the LHR-MAD sector is a different booking Ref.

We'll have one check-in bag with us, and of course I'll ask at SYD when we check-in, but should the bag go right through, or do we need to go landside in LHR (T3) to pick it up, go across to T5 and check it in again there? We have about 4 hours transit so no drama on time.

Just don't want to arrive in MAD and our bag doesn't!
"She who must be obeyed" would not be amused.

Given all the disruptions etc and that we have loads of time, I'm almost inclined to exit T3 and hang out at the baggage carousel anyway.
Big hassle though..........

If it’s one ticket, the bags should be checked thru and you go through the Transfers to T5.

The second PNR is probably the IB PNR (it might even be only 5 digits) but ought to open on the IB website / app.

I think you should know at check in at SYD if the bags are tagged for MAD or LHR, can at least ask then.

Yeh IB always only uses 5 digits (I do plenty of OW itins that connect to IB on the one ticket and it’s normal to have this so can log into IB app for seat selection if it’s on IB code - IB seat selection doesnt seem to work with codeshares fyi)

Interesting. Thanks folks.
Shows on my QF account as two seperate bookings.
Each booking has a 6 character code.
The code for the IB flight gives me access on the IB website for seat selection.

All will be revealed at SYD check-in I hope when they tag our bag!

I’m pretty certain it’ll be fine on one ticket. Especially as CRs.

Except when they also use 6 digit PNRs - including their own bookings!

It has in the past with QR but another trip isn’t working…I was going to call QR but a little war kicked off…

Have you got your e-ticket? Are both bookings under the same ticket number?

No, two different booking references.
and
Two different ticket numbers.

Maybe that's the key indicator?
A bummer if we have to collect bags at LHR.
But better to know in advance!

According to this (a long way down the document) it says through check is permitted one separate tickets for oneworld as ok as long one ticket is QFFF. But you’ll have to notify the check-in agent.

If it’s separate tickets, have you paid the UK departure tax? Seems odd the system has done that.

No, nothing on there about UK departure tax.

On that link you provided it includes this.........Sounds a bit hit and miss to me. :(

What if I am travelling on separate tickets?
  • oneworld flights on separate tickets/bookings are not eligible for through check–in, except if you have a Qantas Frequent Flyer reward or Qantas commercial booking, advise airport staff at check-in of the booking references.

But if they’re both CRs, then technically you should still be able to get bags checked through. You might get told “no”, but persevere. Ask for a supervisor if necessary…
No, nothing on there about UK departure tax.
Technically (again), you wouldn’t be paying UK APD if connecting.

So more’s the point, you’ve probably overpaid UK departure tax having a seperate ticket.

Ultimately, what was more expensive, paying the UK tax, or 5000 pts to QF to add the LHR-MAD flight to your existing SYD-LHR?

Now spank yourself if you could have booked SYD-SIN-LHR-MAD online DIY via the MC search.

I did book online DIY via the MC search......... 🙄
And I haven't paid any UK departure tax. (At least that I'm aware of)
Under the normal fees/charges etc there is GBP 42 / head.
Maybe that's the UK APD?

So you do have ONE ticket from QF flying SYD-SIN-LHR-MAD?

If so, no additional UK departure tax, AND bags checked thru.

Hopefully...............
Was just confused with two booking refs and two ticket numbers.
All will be revealed at check in!

I’m still confused why you have two ticket numbers?

Was it booked all one trip SYD-MAD?

The extra PNR(s) is not unusual if flying on other airlines as part of one booking.

Are there two of you travelling?

Or is there one ticket number for SYD-LHR, then a completely separate document and new ticket number for LHR-MAD?

So if there two of you travelling you have four tickets in total, or two tickets in total for just one of you.

Two booking refs, two tickets each for 2 pax.
I'm beginning to think...........maybe I couldn't get SYD-MAD i MC Serach?
And then I booked the SYD-SIN-LHR in one booking.
then looked at how to get to MAD and did that as another booking......
Both done online with QF, but maybe one after another.
The confirmation emails were 5 mins apart.........

It was done in a rush as the war started to get a backup flight.

That must be the answer I think.
Apologies for being a dumb cough :(

So we get to enter the UK, get our bag, and leave again.......

Touch wood our Plan A flight via Dubai might still come off, but I doubt it.

Yes, 4 ticket numbers..........
I obviously screwed up the way I booked it :(

All is not lost!

As CRs, QF should still technically check you thru!

As above, if told “no”, ask politely given they’re CRs. If told “That’s not possible” (which is code for ‘I don’t know how to’), politely ask for a supervisor because they hopefully do know how to…
