So, I'm a newbie. I've done much reading here but still am unsure about my upcoming flight to LAX.

My father and I are flying together, and he is a Gold FF with Qantas. We have purchased economy seats, and requested a business upgrade using his frequent flyer miles for both our tickets.

Now, does this mean we have requested a 'U' upgrade or a 'J' upgrade?

Is 'U' when your entire ticket is paid for with miles? Or is it also this kind of upgrade?

So, when I observe seat availability on seatcounter or whatever, am I hoping J stays nice and available, or am I looking for U seats?

Also, anyone got experience seeking to upgrade on this leg? With a Gold status, what are the percentage chances of it coming through?

Welcome to AFF boutan :)

Transpacific is a popular flight in business class and lots of award and upgrade requests. Gold is reasonably high status, but your waitlist will be behind all chairmans lounge and platinum upgrade requests as well as any golds who put in their request earlier than you did.

Chances vary considerably on route, day of week, specific flight, time of year, etc.

U is the fare bucket used for business class aware tickets (both domestic and international) and domestic confirmed upgrades.

International upgrades do not come from a specific fare bucket but are processed by QF Yield Management around 24 hours before departure and they can use any unsold seats in the upgraded cabin. So just because you see U available does not mean an international waitlist wll clear - it could go to a last minute award ticket for business class travel.

Note that the international upgrade waitlist is processed in a specific order, with all Platinum member requests being processed before all Gold member requests and so on. Within each FF status category, the priority is based on the time the waitlist was requested.

It does not really matter whhat you see as available as it is up to Yield Management to decide how many of the unsold business class seats they want to allocated to upgrades for that flight. And that happens sometime within the last 24 hours before departure. Of course if you see no availability in J/D/C/I/U then assume there are no unsold seats. However, when upgrades to First class have been processed, there may be some spare seats that may be used for business class upgrades if Yield Management so decides. In my experience, seeing lots of D available in the last days before the flight means the people at the head of the waitlist queue are likely to be successful. But of course there is no way to know how many seats Yield Management will determine should be made available for upgrades (unlikely all unsold seats unless economy is oversold) and how many people are ahead of you on the waitlist.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
