More specifically I plan to go Syd-Osaka then Osaka-Incheon return, then Tokyo-Syd.

Syd-Osaka will more than likely be Jetstar.
Osaka-Incheon return will be a budget Japanese or Korean airline.

Which leaves Tokyo to Sydney being the best way to use my QFF points?

It will be 2 adults and a child.

I currently have around 100,000 points.

According to the Qantas site we could go Economy Sydney to Tokyo for 108,000 points and pay $772.86 taxes/fees, can I assume this will be the same if reversed(Tok-Syd)?

If we could all go one way for that price it would be great. Would we be surprised with any additional costs?

Do you guys think this is the best way to use the points/save the most money?

Thanks!

Hi there BoomTower14,

Given a one way ticket SYD-NRT can be purchased for $746 on QF I'd say your points redemption is woeful in terms of value for money.

If you are looking for cheap ways to Japan there are plenty of options to take. When are you looking to travel?

Hi,

Is the fee per person? I assumed that was the total for the 3 of us.

We want to travel in December 2015.

Hi,

The 108,000 points/$772.86 taxes was for economy, I'd be open to business class if I didn't have a 18 month old baby that could disturb it for everyone. But mainly I just want to make it as cheap as possible.

Sorry, I thought you were wanting business class.

I can see three award seats next October (latest you can book out at 365 days) on QF in Y for 108k points and
¥78810 (JPY) which translates to ~ $820 AUD on the current conversion rate.

However as a WP I have access to more award seats than normal and I'm not sure of your FF status if any?. If you were to book I'd suggest doing it at 365 days out, otherwise you would have to look at other alternatives like with CX via HKG or JAL via SIN. It doesnt look the like worst redemption rate out there at 1.2c per point (come are as little as .2 or .3 of a cent). But there are better options in terms of redemption other than Y awards. Upgrades are arguably a better ROI.
