We (husband & I) need to fly to Catania with our parents who are in their 80's, mum needs a walking stick and is not overly mobile. we will also be travelling with our 5yo daughter. We are not sure when we should travel - either at Christmas or Easter. What is the best route to travel? We will need to go business class, we have 200,000 QFF points to share and the rest will have to be paid for. Because of the age and capability of our traveling companions we think that a sleepover in an airport hotel might be a good option. we're not sure where to start our search for the best fare and points combo for our trip. We'd be very grateful for any advice. Thanks

So we can help, what is your point of departure? Which airlines are you willing to fly, and is budget your main concern? What is your budget?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

you may want to go via dubai for a stop I think to break up the journey of 30 odd hours evenly.

200k qf points will be you 1 person return to DXB, if you have a long enough break it should be safe enough to then purchase a seperate ticket for that 1 person

for the DXB to CTA sectors, the bestrouting from there being via Gatwick with EK on QF code and onto CTA with BA

That would be like going from Melbourne to Adelaide via Perth.

True but I am thinking that a transfer at lgw would be preferable to other intra Europe or intra italy options (and ba a preferable carrier)

Departing Sydney. Prefer the safest, decent service, well established airlines (whatever that really means?) we're looking for good value for money and time. :)
Thanks

I am not sure that many on here will agree with me here but I can say we had a safe, relaxed flight from MXP-CTA using easyJet. It is less than 2hrs flight & they will look after less able bodied well. The rest of you could use speedy boarding. There are hotels at the airport. Getting from SYD-MXP will be more complicated but you have quite a few choices.

SYD-MXP shouldn't be that hard. I can think of atleast one airline who does that in one stop.

Obviously travelling Easter or Xmas is "peak" periods so may be more expensive than what you see advertised as "advance booking" or cheap restrictive fares.

Will be minimum of two stops from anywhere.

QF currently have an ecomony fare around the $2500 mark SYD-DXB-LHR-CTA and return. You could look at purchasing Y+ for the "infirm" and then attempting to upgrade with points (never guaranteed but Y+ an ok fallback) as 200,000 points wont get more than one ticket in business as has been described previously.

DXB would be an easy breakpoint.

Etihad have fares via AUH+FCO but your QF points will be no use but there's less backtracking (you could sign up to virgin and use family pooling to maximise your points into one account).

It may even be worth considering getting a (good) travel agent to do the hard work for you given your specific requirements.

Also consider travel insurance implications and what happens if your elderly relatives become unwell whilst overseas / in transit.
