I'm flying to the US on combination of points and pay using VA and Hawaiian and have a couple of questions for you seasoned travelers. I'm Velocity Gold, travelling economy.

The trip is

SYD-BNE Virgin connecting to (2 hour connection) BNE-HON Hawaiian connecting to (6 hour layover) HON-SFO Hawaiian

SFO-LAX Virgin America (3 hour connection) to LAX-SYD Virgin Australia

Questions

Will VA check me & luggage to HON when I check in in Sydney?
Assume I will need to clear customs and collect luggage and then re-checkin for HON-SFO?
Anyone suggest anything to do in HON for 5 or so hours as I won't be able to access the Delta lounge? Enough time to head into Honolulu to have a look around?
Will Virgin America be able to check my bags through to Sydney from SFO?

Lounge Access I think I can use

BNE - Air NZ lounge
HON - None
SFO - None
LAX - Star Alliance

HON? Do you mean Honolulu HNL?

Yes, I meant HNL. Thanks for the tip.

If anyone can help with the questions though Id appreciate it

1- Yes VA should be able to check bags all the way to SFO ( the bags will be tagged to SFO but you pick up in HNL)
2- Yes, as first port in USA , you will clear customs etc in HNL and go thru security etc
3- Pearl Hbr could be a option, however it all depends on arrival time as clearing customs .... then getting back to airport and clearing security etc.. flights in the USA can start boarding -45 mins before departure..
4- HNL is about a 25 min taxi ride ( depending on traffic) so possible
5- VX should check bags SFO SYD

If you have Priority Pass membership you could have lounge access in HNL or SFO. Also if you have an Amex Plat card or Centurion card there is an Amex Centurion Lounge now in SFO. Check whether your credit cards have offer any overseas lounge access with airline lounges.

They should through check your bags to SFO or even LAS provided all flights are in the same pnr & they have a baggage interline agreement with HA & VX. In any case the VA CSA at T2 in SYD will advise you where you bags are checked to.

As HNL is your first port of entry to the USA you will definitely need to clear customs here irrespective of whether your bags are tagged to HNL, SFO or LAS. If your bag hasn't been checked to SFO or LAS I would checkin your bag & get your boarding pass HNL/SFO before leaving the airport as you don't want to leave it until the last minute.

Depending on how long it takes for you to get through customs and how much time you have left before your next flight departure you could take a taxi up to the Ala Moana shopping centre for a look around as hanging around the airport would be pretty tedious. You could always have brekkie at Eggs 'n' Things at the Ala Moana Plaza (next to Ala Moana shopping center).

Just a tip re the HA onboard catering: you get bugger all to eat inflight so make sure you have a good feed prior to a long HA flight & even then take something substantial on the plane as well to eat otherwise you'll starve.

Will Virgin America be able to check my bags through to Sydney from SFO?

If they have an interline baggage agreement they will. I find that when departing from the USA their airlines are more relaxed about checking bags through to other airlines that they are ex Australia.

If they can't through check your bags SFO/xLAX/SYD it's no big deal as you VX flight SFO/LAX should arrive at terminal 3 in LAX which is where you checkin for your VA flight LAX/SYD. Once you have your VA boarding pass you make your way from T3 next door to the TBIT where the Star Alliance Lounge is and where your LAX/SYD flight departs from.

Hire a stretch limo from ABC limo's there cost us last time USD$220 for 3 hour drive around HNL places of interest and beaches, driver was a great guide. Recon they could pick you up from airport and take different route, ask them via email.

Do you get fries with that Limewood or do they provide some adult refreshment in the limo?

I'd want the limo for a full day for that kind of cash.
