I'm planning a short trip to Rome next April using award flights. Have the return booked with Singapore using KF miles and a booking SYD-AUH in Etihad first which used up our remaining AA miles. Now I need to get us from AUH-FCO.

Right now, there is no availability in business but there are economy seats which would get us there. And perhaps business could become available last minute. I could book using Velocity or Etihad Guest (transferring MR's.)

My concern is with booking the two legs separately and an unprotected connection. Is there any way to prevent this? A method of booking the two legs, in different classes, on the one PNR? I'd prefer to not spend 24hrs+ in Abu Dhabi as we only have a week's break and want to spend maximum hrs at our destination...

I did ponder a transfer AUH-DXB for the last leg but, again, we'd be up the creek if our first flight was delayed.
