Yes I know it is in Y but not all of us have FF points to sit up the front. Anyway you feel sometimes that unless you are flying J or F your report is not worth reading, I am sure more people would write reports if flying in Y wasn't so frowned upon, or looked down upon.

A child free weekend in Auckland and a chance to catch up with friends of over 30 years, so I thought it would be good to try the LAN 787-9 over and come back on the Emirates A380. Last time I came back I flew J and it was sensational. They ran out of Champagne at the bar so they went up and got some Dom from First class. Saying that there was the fruity taste of the bubbles popping off my tongue with the sweet flavours of delicate fresh violets in a setting of white peaches is complete rubbish at 38,000 ft

Back to reality, dropping of one child to go on a camp at 6.15 am, another for tennis at 7.15 am, another at the station at 7.30 am, the dog at 7.45 am, the car to the mechanics at 8 am I was already exhausted, the train to the Airport was painless and it was great to not have that stress of driving in peak hour, especially in Sydney. Check in queue was very long and very slow, not having any bags I should have asked earlier but after 20 minutes I called Mr LAN over and he said to just head down to the end where the online check in was. Arrgh. Interesting I couldn't check in online prior anyway. Then to the security and guess what, rookie mistake no pen, but cleverly they have a charity selling pens for a couple of dollars, security was a shambles and that was another 30 minutes. I had hoped to spend some time in the Amex Centurion lounge but got about 15 minutes. It was small, with a limited breakfast selection - why can't they offer Beef sausages instead of pork or chicken. Asked for a Bloody Mary and the waiter had to explain to his colleague what is was, was very nice though but would have liked more time to enjoy it, even though it was missing the essential vodka

Onto the plane and I was in a full row of three with the row behind having just one person in it, the anxious wait for the door to shut and bam, drop my bag in the seat behind and 4 happy people in 2 rows of 6. Took off from runway 34R after a long taxi 30 minutes after 1055am schedule. Didn't realise wide bodies left from this runway. After a while they commenced service and was met with a quizzical look when I asked for a beer, it came eventually but that was the last service of the flight unless you asked. Food was absolutely awful, cold ham and cheese foccaccia, other than that a average flight, the flex and flutter on the composite wing is amazing. Timing into Auckland wasn't the best as it was peak hour and took 90 minutes to get into town. Another rookie mistake is reading first then watching a movie only to have 15 minutes left to go when you land

All in all next time probably fly the Qantas flight later in the day even though it is a 737
Return trip to come

I think all trip reports are great, after all we never knkw when our personal circumstances will change and we end up at the back of the bus. Thanks for writing

I don't think Y reports are frowned upon, it's just that there's far less difference between various carrier's Y products so reviews of them would end up very similar.

I certainly like to read any TR regardless of cabin category and some of the really interesting ones are for travel in Y but there seems to be a bit of a premium cabin bias to TRs and posts. This is not unexpected given the business interests etc of many of the AFF community.
I've looked at LAN across the ditch a few times and am so glad you posted.
Thanks.

Thanks for the TR. As far as class of travel goes I'm probably more interested in the info that makes economy travel more enjoyable as that's where a bit of knowledge can really make a real difference. IMHO in most cases you really have to be trying to have an unpleasant trip in business or first on any of the mainstream carriers.

After a great time in Auckland ferry to Davenport, dinner with friends and relaxing without kids it was time to head home

EK413 Dpt AKL 3.55 Arr SYD 7.18 - it was pretty much on time, check in was a breeze, but they stick it at the far end of the airport and despite picking A and C seats hoping the center would be empty ( a trick us poor people try) alas it was occupied buy a lovely girl was happy to give up the center for a window. The difference between LAN and Emirates was significant. The 787 was a nice and seemed spacious plane the A380 not so much but better legroom however the service and food was outstanding. Maybe Emirates use this leg for crew training but there seemed to be lots of FA's and noticeably from all over the world. Getting a drink just required a wave of the empty bottle - got me in trouble with the boss. I had the butter chicken which was nice but not much and the boss had the salmon which was so so. IFE was excellent and got to watch the end of the movie I missed on the way over - The Big Short, well worth watching as it gives you an insight into the disaster that was the subprime mortgage collapse in the US.

All in all I would fly Emirates Y anytime and having flown them in J previously would recommend them as well. I would say it is the best way to cross the Tasman when the alternative is 737's from Qantas and Air NZ. Not sure about their 787

Further to the Emirates service when the boss came back last week she sat with a friend who ended up with food poisoning from something she ate earlier in the day. I was told the staff were exemplary and went over the top to make sure she was OK. Even giving her oxygen and seeing if she needed assistance to get through immigration. So much for their 3 hour catch up

Customs was a breeze and then driving around to collect the kids and dog and life returns to normal again with the memories of romantically sitting by the viaduct having a beer rapidly fading away

Hope you enjoyed the report and I really encourage people to post all reports irrespective of what class they fly in as we can all get something out of it, one guy on Flyertalk even wrote about his trip on a container ship - really interesting- link is here Crossing the Pacific on the slow Hyundai from China - FlyerTalk Forums

Over and out for now

For a 3 hour flight its not too bad, $800 vs $250 difference I can live with, but anything longer it makes it worthwhile, previously I used to points upgrade most trips to NZ but the Emirates service was good enough to make me think twice

Thanks for sharing, no reason why there shouldn't be more economy reviews or advice when it comes to particular seats on aircraft / carriers.

thanks for sharing! i agree that there seems to be a bias to J & F TRs, but Y TRs are great as well!

On that note - I find EK Y FAs to be very hit and miss, depending on the mix of FAs on the flight - some can be super helpful, but some can be very standoff-ish, to the point that you feel guilty asking for something simple..
