I edited, sorry. It was the HI Melbourne, and it certainly was there in 1972.

We are going OT, same design was used by the then Travelodge across the cities, Darwin and Port Moresby have the same shape Holiday Inns, as is what is now the Rydges in Camperdown, Sydney. I think they were all built at the same time, I know DRW survived Tracey and has a nice picture of a pool with a car insert or two.

As per the linked article, the current HI MEL was opened (as a Travelodge) in 1970, same year as MEL. The HI brand is 60 years old (worldwide).
