Are you sure, the HI at the Airport is not 40 years old, it was built as a Parkroyal in 82??

I edited, sorry. It was the HI Melbourne, and it certainly was there in 1972.

We are going OT, same design was used by the then Travelodge across the cities, Darwin and Port Moresby have the same shape Holiday Inns, as is what is now the Rydges in Camperdown, Sydney. I think they were all built at the same time, I know DRW survived Tracey and has a nice picture of a pool with a car insert or two.

I read it that Blinky was saying that it is their 40 year anniversary, not the hotel's.

As per the linked article, the current HI MEL was opened (as a Travelodge) in 1970, same year as MEL. The HI brand is 60 years old (worldwide).
