CGK and all Jakarta area airports remain closed due to volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau (child of Krakatoa).



I fly on QF41 SYD-CGK on Tuesday… so hopefully the winds will shift to be from the south or east.

Eruption commenced 2307 local time in Western Indonesia on Friday evening.

If you look at the FR24 screenshot above, reports in Indonesia say the initial eruption was heard in Bandung which is about 250KM away.

Anak Krakatau erupts every few years so this is nothing new.

Also, the airport (CGK) first closed due to ash last night, but the timing for reopening has now been pushed back three times today. Currently forecast to reopen 1730 local time in Jakarta. (they’re Z+7)

Winds are from the south east so the ash cloud should be moving to the NW and affecting Sumatra area.

These are "minor eruptions"

This all explains why our flight Per/Sin flight on Saturday morning was on such a strange route. The FA said the change was due to a volcano but didn't specify which one

My partner told me there’s ash all over Jakarta. Looks like a fog and recommended to wear N95 Masks

Saw some of the footage, it looked like a large eruption, ones that get people nervous at the time as it could get bigger.

Volcanic ash plumes rose well into the stratosphere so it'll really be up to hiw the wind blows now (assuming no more big eruptions).

No airline is sane enough to fly in volcanic ash anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's hundreds of thousands of disruptions and people stuck at CGK and nearby airports.

Jet engines really hate that stuff. I understand their caution in suspending operations

BA9 was the famous incident with all 4 engines being lost (before recovering some once they left the ash) they also had the whole windows sandblasted so they had to make the emergency landing blind and with untrustworthy airspeeds. I think theres a few other examples like SQ21 (which flew into the same cloud shortly after and suffered similar fates 3/4 engines down).

KLM847 also lost all 4 engines flying through volcanic ash over Alaska

Darwin VAAC indicate with their forecasts there will be issues with CGK for some time, second eruption is topping FL150, other eruptions across the ring of fire are topping out at half that height. Looking at the synoptic charts very little help with wind over the next few days.
